    Foundations – Chapter 5

“So, Tina, tell me… how have you been?”

Tina inhaled and puffed out her cheeks like a blowfish before letting the air out again. She shrugged her shoulders. “Fine, I guess. Am I looking like the picture of domestic bliss?”

Jenny smiled a little. “You look great.”

Tina laughed at this. “Thank you for being polite, but I know that I look fat, pregnant, and old. At least I have shoes on.”

Jenny laughed along with her. They were walking through Tina’s neighborhood. Jenny had dropped by unexpectedly, smooth and enigmatic, wanting to talk. Tina, who had taken a day off and spent it at home, was glad to get out and get some fresh air. She was heavily pregnant now, almost to the point where walking would begin to resemble waddling, and despite her best efforts at keeping the pounds off and staying active, she was packing the weight on. She was eager for any chance to squeeze in a little more exercise, but most of all she was curious about what had brought Jenny to her door.

It was dusk, and occasionally joggers and dog-walkers passed them by. The sounds of children at play surged and ebbed around them, eventually fading into background noise. Tina walked on in silence, leaving an opening for Jenny to speak up if she wished.

“I’ve got some news,” Jenny said slowly, drawing out the suspense.

    “Yeah? Spill!”

“We-elll,” Jenny began, “Keep in mind you’re the first to know, but I’ve got a new agent and we’re shopping around another script.”

At this, Tina stopped walking and threw her arms around Jenny a little overenthusiastically. “Jen, that’s great! You must be so excited!”

Jenny laughed a little uncomfortably and extracted her skinny body from Tina’s embrace. “Yes,” she said as a response to Tina’s explosive happiness. “And don’t worry, it’s nothing like Lez Girls. Everything is totally fictional. But I wanted you to know, after the way you stood by me through everything…” Jenny trailed off.

Tina couldn’t resist giving Jenny another squeeze. Jenny submitted to it and talked on, describing her vision and her hopes for her next movie to Tina in detail. Tina felt a surge of almost maternal pride, her thoughts turning to the Jenny she had first met all those years ago: a little shy, a little scared, but slowly unfolding into the woman she wanted to be. Tina felt like she was looking at that person now, just nearly. There was a gossamer haze of sadness hanging over Jenny still, and Tina wished she could blow it away once and for all, but she knew it was impossible.

    1. well since you said “fast food” fish taco, i fear tina made the wrong choice in dining establishments, apparently she doesn’t know the deliciousness that is rubio’s!? mmm, i’m getting hungry just thinking about it….thx for this & pps

    2. Great chapter, O’Malley! Vis-a-vis Maury, I must confess, I lost all respect for Connie Chung once I found out she was married to him. All their embarassing over-sharing about their attempts to get pregnant just turned me off!Did you know that Maury was once a respected serious journalist, the son of a very good sportswriter? And Jerry Springer was once the mayor of Cincinnatti? Well, sex sells, somewhere. Loved this chapter. The ambiguity that Tina feels and expresses is real. Thanks for showing that pregnancy is not all sunshine and roses. I want a burrito!

    3. Way to go, Kennard! Loved the whole taco-purple-stomachache thing, it got me laughing hard. As for the pregnancy-job thing, well, life is not all about roses. Love your insight and the way you write :)

    4. Hilarious…I got hooked on Days of Our Lives, well, one actress actually…when I was pregnant many moons ago & like Tina I couldn’t wait to get back to work either even though I adored my baby. Great omalley. I needed a good laugh. PPS.

    5. Maury Povich–love how you got down pat his alleged hug that is really a death grip to keep the guest from runing off stage. And–since YOU brought it up–have you ever wondered if the women with dozens of potential baby daddies just want multiple trips to NYC and are probably getting guys to pay her $50 to be named so they could get a trip to NY, too? OK, OK. No more tabloid TV talk. Loved the chapter. Thanks for giving us Tina’s spin on the work vs. home dilemma. Oh and uh–could you maybe, just maybe, only if you want to of course, but you might want to consider–Bette on Rachel Ray. Bette’s head spinning in circles as she tries to figure out what is going on as RR changes subjects with every sentnce, and Bette desperately trying to ge a word in. Good times.

    6. What a great story and great interactions between B and T. This is so carefully written and cleverly crafted. The small dramas of everyday relationships writ large and meaningful. I’m really impressed AND best of all really AMUSED. Thank you.
