    Friends ch. 22b

Bette and Kelly parted ways for Christmas, calling each other every day until they saw one another again. They spent the rest of the school year together as a couple. They didn’t keep their relationship a secret for long, it wasn’t something they could hide anyway. Bette was too proud of her relationship to keep it between them; she was so in love that nothing could break her spirit. She had only been in love once before this and it was just as powerful. She felt like she could do anything. She loved with all her heart she knew Kelly was the one she wanted to build a life with. Have a family with. Grow old with. Both Kelly and Bette passed all their finals and Bette was her class valedictorian. Kelly couldn’t have been more proud, but Bette could sense that Kelly was holding something back; there was something that she wasn’t telling her. In the days leading up to Bette’s graduation, Kelly had met some of Bette’s closest family member, her closest being her older sister Kit. Kit had seen her share of the world and had her own ups and downs. She was fifteen when Bette was born and had already struck a record deal with Jive Records. Kit was hardly ever home, touring the world with her band, singing in clubs and getting in trouble with drugs and alcohol. With having such a huge age gap, and Kit’s busy schedule, they weren’t close when Bette was growing up. They had grown very close after Bette’s mother, Maxine, died when she was twelve. Kit stepped in to help out, moving Bette from Chicago to her home in New York City, being sort of a mother to Bette and also the father she needed since Melvin was too busy to care for his youngest daughter. She had seen Bette through the very thick times to the better times. Kit always knew who was right and who was wrong for Bette and Kit felt in her bones that Kelly was not right for Bette at all. She told Bette that getting Kelly a promise ring was a mistake; they had a huge argument hours before Bette’s graduation. Bette being thick headed didn’t listen to her big sister, so Kit just stood by in the background waiting for Bette to fall so she could catch her.
