Friendship Foundation Chapter 27
Story written on February 18, 2013 by justkeepswimming.
"Do they know about the change in your relationship status?" Bette asked.
"They know I’m not with Eric, but I thought I’d imply a break instead of seeming like I went from one relationship right to another."
"Are you worried about how they might react?"
"Honestly, no," Tina replied. "My mom has worked in the arts ever since I can remember. Writers, artists, musicians, dancers…she didn’t have the most conservative group of friends as I was growing up."
"That’s great," Bette said. "That you feel so assured from that perspective I mean."
"I might tell her tonight," Tina said. "I’ll let her tell my dad though."
"Not quite as easy to have those talks with your father?"
"At his most talkative, he’s not really a phone conversationalist, but I’m sure he would just pass the phone to mom if I shared the news I was dating a woman."
"And yet you insist on making me talk about my emotions," Bette noted. "I’m beginning to see why."
"I don’t feel very close to my father," Tina agreed. "I would never let anyone I was in a relationship with to be that emotionally unavailable."
"And see, knowing that makes me want to be more communicative," Bette said.
"I’ll call you before I go to sleep – let you know how the talk with my mom went," Tina said, rising up from her position on the sofa.
"I’ll get your bag," Bette offered. "Was there anything else?"
"No, it’s all packed," Tina replied.
They hugged goodbye and once Tina drove away, Bette took a seat at her dining room table. Before she knew it, the phone was ringing. Three hours had passed and she was still pouring over portfolios. She glanced at the caller id before answering.
"Hey you," Bette said.
"What are you up to?" Tina asked.
"I’ve gotten a lot of work done tonight," Bette said. "How were your parents?"
"They want to come for a visit," Tina said.
"So you told them?"
"Yes, and they want to meet you," Tina said.
"Did they ever meet Eric?"
"No, but I never spoke with as much enthusiasm for Eric as I did for you," Tina admitted.
"And your enthusiasm made them think they needed to meet me?"
"I guess so."
"I’m certainly glad you’re enthusiastic," Bette said. "When are they going to be here?"
"Next Friday," Tina replied with a mild grimace.
"Wow, they’re not wasting any time," Bette said.
"They’re probably making hotel reservations as I speak."
"Why would they stay at a hotel?" Bette said. "They should stay at your place and you can stay here."
"I didn’t want to be presumptuous."
"Tina." Bette smiled. "You can stay here, just like you have been, and your parents can use your apartment."
"I’ll let them know," Tina said. "Sorry, it seems you’re about to be inundated with meeting everyone in my life over the next little while."
"No need to apologize," Bette said. "If they’re in your life, they’re in my life now too."
"Okay," Tina replied. "I should phone to keep them from booking a hotel."
"Tee?" Bette started. "It’s a good thing you want me to meet the people that are important to you."
"I think so too," Tina agreed. "Have a good sleep."
"Goodnight," Bette said.
Bette hung up the phone and quickly picked it up again to call her father.

Just an awesome story. Tina’s parents are quite grown up, too. I like the way they speak to each other, never presuming that the other would just follow suite. Bette even had a good reason for offering her house key w/o forcing Tina to do the same. I like that Tina gets Bette to be more communicative. This Tina really knows what she wants and declares it. She’s not passive-aggressive like Tina in TLW. Can Bette handle this “strong, I know what I want” Tina long term? Or will Tina soften her edges to accommodate willful Bette? Time will tell. I am in sunny AZ where it is 75 degrees today. Sorry, swimmie.
I think Tina will eventually be able to draw Bette out a bit more into speaking about her feelings, but she seems to find Bette’s shyness somewhat endearing for now. The visit with Tina’s parents may be enlightening… I’m wondering how Melvin is going to react if or when Bette tells him about Tina. As for Eric, I’ve never seen him as much of a bad guy, just someone that Tina didn’t feel half as strongly for as she felt for Bette. And I really find it hard to believe that a milquetoast version of Tina would hold Bette’s, or anyone else’s, attention for long. That’s certainly not the case here, Bette’s enthralled. I hope warmer weather comes your way soon. It was a positively balmy 9C here today… sunlight and summery breezes. Thanks for the post! :)
Love the way you write Tina’s character, well both of them actually, but esp Tina. Always have loved the way you write, very glad to hear there is a ways to go with this story, i could read your writing without getting bored indefinitely, adore your style and the way your write conversation. More, more, more! Please and thank you!
I wonder how Bette’s dad will react to the news. Better then on the show, I hope. Looking forward to Bette meeting Tina’s co-workers and parents. Thank you for your amazing writing. :)
Wow 😃 beautiful. This s why I love you swimmie, I wish all relationships could be lie this. You show a level of understanding between these two, that it could only be fiction. Yet I strive to be that way. Thank you 😘
I like Tina just the way you’ve written her. I think they are perfect together. (don’t know why querida is always capitalized, not my idea!)
wow meeting everyone at once… let the party begin
meeting the work pals -&- the ‘rents! – will be tuning into your next chapters :)
“No need to apologize”, Bette said, “If they’re in your life, then they’re in my life now too.” Who is this woman, and what have you done with Bette Porter?
I like the way you’ve written both characters. I think Bette will open up more about her feelings as they progress…probably guarding her heart involuntarily.
The physical interactions, heck yeah enjoy it. Bette calling Melvin…so it’s the meeting of the parents. I wonder how Tina’s parents will react to Bette and Melvin and vice versa. Great update Swimmie. It was cold and windy here in the NYC area. Forties tomorrow.
Such a great story. So glad there is more to come!
I feel like they are just leasing to moving in together lol…..oh and meeting the family Woh!!! I hope Bette doesn’t try and bring Melvin in on this meeting as well lol great update love the story pps
Looking forward to the next chapter, will be interesting meetings.Amazing story, thank you.
Love it!!
Hey Swimmie! Can’t tell you how glad I am to see you continuing this story. My only regret is that life seems to be interfering with my ability to keep up with and comment on your posts. The more I read your FF it makes me wish Tina and Bette had been written more like this on TLW. Keep up the awesome job! I’m looking forward to your “Meet the Parents” post ;)
ITA w/you about Tina’s reaction to Marcus’ crazy GF. I remember screaming @ the TV, begging Bette to call her sister or friends. It just seemed so ridiculous to me. Little did I know that IC would write more ridiculous story lines. Yes, I know TLW is/was fictional but it had so much potential. So now JB is shooting a pilot episode of a night time soap that is co-produced by IC. JB was very critical of IC rendition of S6 but business is business. It’s better to work than not.
Wow and I thought I had a big week — no comparison — key exchanges, meeting work colleagues, meeting the in-laws, those two have a lot going on to keep us interested!
just caught up with your awesome story. i absolutely love their relationship and agree with your comments. can’t get enough of this story, so thank you for posting as often as you do
How cute is Bette leaving the key on the counter! And it’s so good to see Bette trying to share her feelings more to make Tina happy…. off to the next chapter I go.
Another great chapter jks and again, I love that you are drawing out perspectives not frequently touched on. Not to diminish the profound impact on Tina for embarking on a relationship with a woman for the first time but not much has been done on Bette and her inability to express herself emotionally and how that is as new to her as the relationship is to Tina. Bravo!
I so love this story. Thank you
Great chapter. I’m so excited that Tina is ready to let everyone meet Bette. She’s no longer doubting herself and proud of her relationship with Bette. Now lets see what old Melvin has to say about Bette’s new relationship. Somehow I don’t think it’ll be the same reaction. PPS!
Great update! It’s all very realistic and I’m looking forward to Bette meeting the people in Tina’s life! Also hoping Bette’s father will take the news well, have a feeling he won’t but you might surprise me ;)
Really am loving the flow of ur story! After I read a chapter I sit & grin for hours on end! Lol! Thanks!
More to come! Yay! Lots more I hope!
