    Friendship Foundation Chapter 6

"You put this together?" Tina asked.
"I have the capacity to make soup," Bette said. "But I didn’t bake the bread."
"That would be too much to expect."
"Others do it better and with greater ease," Bette said. She removed the lid from another container. "That’s smoked stilton and the soft cheese is a triple cream brie."
"I could get used to this," Tina said, taking a spoonful of soup. "Mmm…squash?"
"Butternut squash," Bette confirmed. "But there’s also roasted cauliflower, lentils and coconut milk in it."
"Coconut milk," Tina said. "I didn’t think it was dairy based, but it tastes so deliciously rich."
    "Thanks," Bette said.
"I don’t know why I had the impression you weren’t much of a home cook." Tina said.
"I’m capable of cooking," Bette said. "And it sounded like you had a hectic day today so I thought it would be nice for you to have a hearty soup for lunch."
"Well…thank you," Tina said. "It’s been the highlight of my day."
Bette sat down and they ate the simple meal she had prepared. The most beautiful thing about their time together was they didn’t feel as though they had to fill it with conversation. Silences between them were comfortable, and in fact seemed filled with communication.
    **********
Bette was sitting on the stairs that led up to her house when Tina arrived. She gestured towards the driveway and Tina pulled in behind her car.
"Does this mean it’s a casual evening?" Bette inquired on Tina’s exit from her vehicle.
Tina was dressed in jeans and a form fitting tank top.
"I’m going to put on a blouse before we leave, but it’s jeans for me tonight," Tina said. She nodded towards the cup Bette held in her hand. "If there’s tea, I’d love some."
"I made a pot," Bette said, standing up to go inside. "Food should be here around 5:30, so we can sit in the back yard for a while."
"How was work today?" Bette asked as she retrieved a cup for Tina’s tea.
"I think I’m going to let go of the frustrations of work for the day," Tina sighed. "There’s nothing I can do about obstinate men who have no vision."

    1. Let’s face it what character on the L-Word respected when someone was in a relationship for more than a few episodes!! I love the pace. I have been known to move at a glacial pace, especially when a friend is involved, the maze of mixed messages, over interpretation, under interpretation, interactions processed, questions ignored, questions answered… It’s a dance – sometimes delicate, sometimes clumsy, hopefully you end up moving in the same direction and if not you rebuild the walls of your broken heart!

    2. I’m eagerly anticipating that facilitation. I think once Tina comes to the realisation herself, the pay-off is going to be amazing. Thank you for the post, jks. :)

    3. Wow upon Wow! I’m just so enjoying every word. Was very pleased to see this new story crop up from you the other day! Slower paces can still be beyond exhilarating :)

    4. *fanfic memes. Here are a couple more stock characters in the Commedia del Arte world of TLW fanfic: Alice the Clown, Shane the Lothario (most like TLW series) Eric the Villain or alternately the Cuckold and Tina, either the Ingenue or the Whore. Thank you JKS, for bringing us TLW, modern drama style.

    5. I have to say, this is one of the more authentic feeling stories I’ve read lately. Given the circumstances of their respective love lives, the pace is just right. Question for all: how did the memes of “Burn-water Bette” and “Fox-in-the-henhouse Bette” come about? Not even in the thinnest dramatic scenes of TLW (and there more than a few), did Bette seem anything but a complex and often conflicted character. I assume that was due to Jennifer Beals’ commitment to the character. It’s refreshing to find a well-rounded Bette in this story, a woman capable of balancing various alliances and interests in her life without becoming a rapacious banshee, hellbent on turning out all of West Hollywood’s womenfolk. In other words, Swimmie, we can take the long way around the barn, I am enjoying the pace and the view.

    6. Great one Swimmie. The story is wonderful and the pace is perfect for this story. It gives them both time to discern what is really happening along with way with the new friendship. Bette knows she wants to be involved intimately with Tina and she has also resolved not to do anything overt towards Tina. Leave it up to Tina to set the pace and come to her own realizations, which I don’t think will be very long. Wonderful chapter keep doing what you’re doing. Thanks.

    7. I will tell you, I’ve never commented on a story before, and can’t help but feel creepy doing so (new to the fanfiction game) but your stories are pretty great; for lack of a better word. Your writing is also “pretty great,” lol. Digging this story, to say the least.

    8. Thank you for another amazing chapter. Don’t know what else to add to the comments as I agree with those above me. You are an amazing writer and we are blessed to be able to read incredibly wonderful writing. Thank you!
