From Scratch (Chapter 1)
Story written on January 18, 2012 by Casual Watcher.
When something suddenly clicked in her head, she spun back around to face Helena and asked, “Is that…?” Receiving a nod in response, Elaine stepped over to the little shelf and retrieved the envelope, pulling out the document inside. “Oh god… so it’s legal now,” She muttered, almost to herself, eyes glued to the bold letters which spelled out ‘DIVORCE’. “When did it arrive?”
“Yesterday,” Helena answered, watching Elaine slide the papers back into the envelope. It was with an almost awkward smile between the two that they made their way through to the living area and both took a seat on the sofa angled towards the television. A talk show program was on, though the volume was down so low Elaine couldn’t be sure if her sister had actually been watching the program or just using to as background noise for the desolate house.
Noticing her sister’s expression and catching the glances she made at the television, Helena stated aloud, “It’s too quiet without the kids, and so empty…” Her eyes fell to her hands as she held her fingers in her lap and quietly proclaimed, “I’m thinking of moving – downsizing. We don’t need all this space here.”
“Really?” Elaine asked, and at Helena’s nod she reproachfully stated, “It’s a little drastic, isn’t it? I mean, the children have grown up here.” When Helena tried to interrupt, Elaine offered, “Maybe you just need a break. No one would condemn you for it, you’ve been through so much this year.”
“A break?” Helena voiced, her face expressing her dubious opinion on the idea, “Like a holiday?”
“Well…yeah,” Elaine nodded, “take the kids, go somewhere warm, and just relax- oh! Actually!” Sitting up in her seat, and having fully grabbed her sister’s attention, she continued, “Andrew’s been calling to see how you are lately – he doesn’t have your new number.”
“I haven’t seen Andy in years,” Helena sighed, remembering the ‘good old days’ growing up with her baby sister and big brother.
“He’s always asking how you are. I’ve been meaning to give him your number, actually, but I just thought you could do without the questions and sympathy,” Elaine told her, to which Helena smirked softly at the idea. Refraining from digressing any longer, the blonde asked, “Why don’t you go and stay with him for a while?”
“What? Andrew won’t want me and the kids under his feet-”
“No, he won’t mind at all, he’s always telling us to visit when we get the chance. And you know what he’s like, he loves kids,” Elaine reasoned, “they’d love it in L.A – the beaches, the sun…” She trailed off with a large, hopeful smile.
Shrugging her shoulders slightly, Helena stated, “I’ll think about it,” though her tone caused Elaine to question whether that would actually happen or not.
“Well do definitely consider it,” Elaine persisted, “there’s no reason for you not to go, the summer holidays are coming up soon and the kids deserve as big a break as you do…plus, Leah’s immune system has improved loads this year, she’s off the inhaler and-”
“Okay, I’ll think about it…definitely,” Helena stated, her tone verging on incredulous amusement at her younger sister’s determination to get her to leave the country. Smiling up at her sister, Elaine held her hands up in surrender and agreed to drop the insistency, settling instead for a much less demanding conversation.
Despite how against the idea of dropping in on her big brother out of the blue she was, Helena could not deny the fact that it had been almost a year since she had seen him face to face, and even longer since she had stayed at his house in L.A. As the darkness grew outside, so did her appeal to the idea of taking a well deserved break.

Nicely written. Welcome to the site. :)
Great start.PPS
Can’t wait for more. I never did watch ‘The Children’ although I was intrigued to the storyline. Wondering how Elaine has dealt with her daughter after this debacle.
