Game Of Seduction – Chapter 4

    CHAPTER 4

Shane’s Jaguar is parked outside Alice’s house and Shane is pressing her ear to the door.
From Al’s apartment, a female voice is moaning.
    “Oh baby… Oh baby…”.
    Shane frowns, amused.
    “Baby?”, she mumbles, silently.
She checks her watch and smirks.
    “Right on time”.
Shane turns the door knob and enters, going directly to the bedroom.
Helena Peabody looks pretty busy, judging by her ecstatic face.
    Alice lies under the covers.
“Oh God… Oh God”, Helena is moaning, “I’m gonna…”.
Shane chuckles silently and steps in.
“Hey Alice, did I leave my…”, she acts surprised, “…Holy shit!”.
    Helena jolts.
    “Jesus!”.
She throws the covers over her face.
Shane chuckles, sitting on the bed and lighting a cigarette.
No movement from under the sheets.
“Helena, is that you under the covers?”.
“Get out of here!”. Helena’s voice muffled.
    Shane sighs and gets up.
She yanks the covers off the bed, revealing Helena and Alice, both almost completely naked.
    “Whoa!”, Shane smirks.
Helena gives Alice the gaze of death.
“I told you to lock the door!”, she hisses.
    Alice shrugs.
    “I thought I did”.
Helena’s apologetic, scared eyes turn on Shane.
“Look McCutcheon. This is was the first time I’ve ever done something like this. I was –“.
“Really drunk and blah blah blah…”, Shane interrupts her apathetically.
    Helena blushes.
“Please don’t tell anyone”, she begs, “This could ruin my career!”.
“Yes, you’re right, it could”, Shane grins evilly.
“Please. I’m begging you. I’ll do anything. Let’s just forget the whole thing”.
    Shane scratches her chin, pensively.
“Hmmmmmm…. Nah. I can’t help you there. It’s too good to pass up”.
    Helena’s eyes widen in terror.
“After all, it is you who’s bad mouthing me to Carmen Morales…”, Shane adds nonchalantly.
    Helena jerks.
“Carmen Morales? I don’t know what you’re talking about!”.
“Come on, Helly”, Shane smirks, “You’re the only one who knows her. The truth will save you”.
    Helena shakes her head.
“I swear on my life, I never said a word to her about you!”.
Alice is distractedly filing her nails.
    “I think she’s telling the truth, McCutcheon… Maybe it’s not her…”.
Shane licks her lips, tilting her head.
“Alright, I believe you. Stop begging. Your secret is safe with me”.
Helena gives her a half-smile full of hope.
“However, there is something you can do for me…”, Shane adds.

    **

Carmen is jogging up a dirt road, on her morning run.
Thirty yards behind her, a golf cart drives off a meadow and lands on the road.
    Shane is driving.
Carmen looks back and scowls, but Shane catches up to her.
“Need a lift?”, she asks, gently.
Carmen shakes her head, panting lightly.
    “No, thank you”.
    “How are you today?”.
    “Give it up”, Carmen winces.
Shane nods her head in understanding.
“Oh right, last night. I guess I owe you an apology…”, she states.
Carmen doesn’t bother to look at her.
    She just keeps jogging.
“I’m not going to speak to you till you realize that you can’t intimidate me”.
Shane keeps on following her alongside.
“Look, I said I am sorry!”, she exclaims.
    Carmen just ignores her.
“Have a nice sleep last night?”, Shane asks after a while, in a softer tone.
    “It was fine”.
“I wish I could say the same for myself…”, Shane replies, shaking her head slowly, “…I was up thinking about you all night”.
Carmen gives her a quick glance.
“I thought we agreed that we were going to be friends”.
“Yes, but unfortunately I can’t just switch the ‘on’ button to ‘off’…”, Shane states, “…The sad fact of the matter is that you’ve unintentionally rubbed off on me”.
Carmen stops running and turns to her.
    “And that’s a bad thing?”.
Shane pushes the brake pedal and sighs heavily.
“I’m trying to better myself, but the one person who can help me is the same one pushing me away”, she murmurs, removing her sunglasses and staring at Carmen.
Carmen rakes her fingers through her long, wavy hair.
“I am sorry, but I am not here to be your savior”, she replies, frankly.
“Well, try this one on for size”, Shane says, “I think I am falling in love with you”.
    Carmen winces.
    “You don’t even know me”.
“Don’t you believe in love at first sight?”.
“Yes, but only when it’s mutual”. Carmen throws her hands in the air. “And this is far from mutual”.
    Shane blinks, just once.
“Do you think we could spend some time together this morning?”, she hazards, quietly.
    “I can’t. I am seeing a friend”.
“Who?”, Shane asks, ducking her head.
    Carmen scoffs.
    “That’s none of your business”.
    “How about tonight?”.
    “I’m busy”.
    “Doing what?”.
“That’s also none of your business”.
Shane’s shoulders slump as her eyes soften.
“…Tell me what to do, Carmen. How can I win your heart. I’ll do anything…”, she mutters staring at her, “…I can’t get you out of my mind”.
Carmen lifts her chin, holding her gaze.
“You truly want to do something to make me happy?”.
    “Yes”.
“And you promise to abide by it?”.
    Shane nods.
    “Without question”.
    Carmen bites her bottom lip.
“Alright. I want you to leave and go back to New York”.
    Shane’s eyes narrow.
    “What?!”.
“If that’s a problem, then I’ll make arrangements to stay with some friends”.
Shane remains silent for a moment, feeling her blood boil in a sudden irritation.
“I’ll leave this afternoon”, she states, coldly, her eyes newly distant, “Happy?”.
    Carmen smiles bitterly.
“It’s not about being happy. You and I can’t –“.
Shane shifts the cart into reverse and backs away.
