    One month later

Dana woke up, jolting in a sitting position, her body drenched in sweat. She had had this dream for one month now, ever since she had started using those products Kate gave her regularly, before every single game. She knew it wasnt right but she couldnt imagine winning a game without it anymore. Her heart was racing and she instinctively put her hand on her chest, as if to calm it down.
She looked at the body next to her. Lara was deeply sleeping. Shes so beautiful she thought. Tears came up to her eyes as fear of losing what she had overcame her.
She got up, knowing that she wouldnt be able to fall asleep anymore and headed for the bathroom.
Once there she looked at her reflection in the mirror. She had deep dark rings under her eyes, the only sign of her sleepless nights. She knew the others assumed it was Lara and her skills in bed, and it was partly true. She smiled inwardly at the thought. But only partly. She couldnt share her dreams with anybody. Not with Lara who didnt know about the whole trafficking and it would probably freak her out and be the end of their relationship. Not with Kate either who would just dismiss it, urge her to be stronger and remind her that she could stop anytime she wanted to.
She sat on the sink and reached into her sportsbag taking a small, carefully hidden wallet out. She took the syringe, carefully manipulating it, slightly tapping off the needle and extended her bare arm. It didnt hurt when the needle made contact with her skin and she pushed the liquid inside into her vein. She had grown familiar to it and Kate had shown her how to do it properly. She had gone from the simple pills one swallows before a game to the high tech products Kate managed to get. Those products were supposed to improve her muscular mass, so that it would add to her strenght and she would be able to smack the balls harder, faster. Besides, those shots couldnt be detected by tests because she did them way before the games.
She placed the syringe back in the box, and looked at the small, almost invisible mark it had left on her arm.
She got back up dropping the bag to the floor, and her gaze met Laras eyes. For one split second she didnt realise what was really happenning, the implications of it. She just stood there, wondering what emotions were playing in Laras eyes. She had never seen them like that. Was it wonder ? Bewilderment ? Incomprehension ? Or rather cold rage ? Angst ? Fear ?
But then it dawned on her. Lara was there, leaning against the door frame. For how long had she been there ? Had she witnessed everything ?
What Lara started, her eyes locked with Danas What are you doing ?
Dana reached for Lara, extending her hand to stroke her face Nothing, I was just she tried to dismiss it, failing miserably to smile reassuringly.
What is this ? Lara sharply interrupted Danas babble, pointing at the bag. She had obviously seen what Dana had been doing.
Dana just looked at her, unable to make up a lame excuse Its just stuff, to help me, you know, get better she stammered.
Lara shook her head, not wanting to believe what she had just heard. She pushed Danas hand away from her : How can you do that ? Dana ! Its ***** going to mess with you, with your body. All it will do is destroy you ! Not help you ! she screamed, losing it. What were you thinking ? she yelled at Dana. Dana backed away, tears stremin down her face. Of course she already knew it wasnt good for her, but couldnt Lara understand it ? the need to be better, the expectations of the people out there ?
How long has it been going on ? Lara weakly asked, getting a grip on her rage, cursing herself for her outburst when she saw Danas distress.
Dana couldnt speak. She just shook her head I dont want you to leave me she whined, sobbing, looking like a little child I need you so much. Lara couldnt resist and gave in, taking her in her arms, rocking back and forth, whispering comforting words to her and delaying to later the talk they would have to go through.

Tina ? Bette shouted from the bedroom, could you come here please ? I need your help with my necklace, I cant get it off !
Coming came Tinas answer from the kitchen. She left the dishes and headed for the bedroom, deciding to break the knews to Bette about their pregnancy. She had tried to bring the subject up for the past few days, but hadnt summoned up the courage to.
Bette heard a loud thud, followed by a muffled sound.
Tina ? she said, worry in her voice. There was no answer, just creeping silence. Tina ? she repeated, louder, now clearly panicked. She could make out soft sounds but didnt know what exactly they were.
She moved carefully, trying to guide her way out with her hands, her body shaking. She let out a small cry when she heard muffled moans and recognised the voice as being Tinas. She quickened her pace, her hands frantically touching everything she could, putting one foot in front of the other, repeating Tinas name. She screwed her eyes up, trying to see something. She could make out shadows. She forced herself, concentrated. The shades of light became forms with no real frames, then objects. She could see the wall of the corridor, the plants on the side, and even the painting hanging on the wall. Then, her eyes fell on the lying form not far away. She rushed towards Tina and took her head in her hands.
Tina was desperately trying to mouth something but the pain prevented her from saying it. She was curled up, holding her stomach.
Bette reached for her hand, wondering what she should do. She quickly grabbed the phone in the nearest room and called 911, her voice trembling as she mumbled incoherent words.
She then came back to Tinas side, and only then did her eyes fall on Tina, seeing her for the first time in months.
And she saw Tinas womb. She wasnt able to process what she had just seen, the world closing in on her, her body sliding down like a lifeless lump.
