    Good-bye Candace

This scene takes place in the beginning of the first episode of Season Two when Bette tells Candace that Tina is the love of her life. They are in bed together at Candace’s house, and have just made love.

"Hey, where did you go?" Candace asked, trying to discern how her lover’s mood had changed so quickly from passionate to distant.

For a moment Bette closed her eyes and thought, ‘where I always go…to Tina.’ Knowing that wasn’t an appropriate answer, she sighed, looking into the eyes of the beautiful woman laying on top of her, knowing the only answers she had were going to cause more pain.

"What’s going on?" Candace again tried to engage the woman she had so quickly and completely fallen for, sensing something was about to happen, and instinctively knowing she wasn’t going to like it.

Bette saw the fear and hesitancy flow into Candace’s eyes, along with compassion and understanding that were always there. Hating herself for what she was about to do, she looked away, unable to hold the gaze of a woman who didn’t deserve the pain that was about to hit her.

    "I can’t…I can’t do this," Bette whispered.

    "Bette…please…"

"No," she interrupted Candace. "I’m sorry. I never should have…"

"Bette…" Candace repeated urgently, her voice unable to hide her panic.

For a moment Bette didn’t respond. Instead she quickly slid out from underneath Candace, all of a sudden unable to stand the feel of the other woman’s skin against her own when her heart was so clearly elsewhere.

"She’s the love of my life," she whispered, knowing she didn’t have to say a name…they both knew who she was talking about.

    "Tina."

"Yes. I am so sorry." Bette repeated her apology as she sat up an swung her legs over the edge of the bed, now wanting nothing more than to create some physical distance from the same woman who she had been unable to keep her hands off of just a few short weeks ago.

"I should have never let you kiss me. I should have been stronger…should have had more faith in my relationship with Tina." Bette lowered her head, staring at her hands in her lap. "I was feeling so vulnerable when you and I met…and then I was blown away by your confidence and strength and…."

    1. “But, even though she had never before made advances toward a woman in a relationship, always strong in her belief that they were off limits, by the time she found out Bette had a partner, she was already too far gone.” Very strong line. It STINKS this is only reserved for one chapter. Maybe…um….more? ;- )) You said so much in so few pages. You’re on a roll, and it really is good to see your name on the site tonight.

    2. though i hated candace for going after bette, i never thought of her as a villain…but still i didn’t like the fact that she knew bette had someone and she went after her anyway…this chapter in a way helped me to deal with that…i’m still glad candy is gone :)

    3. What an incredible story, Seahurst! I really felt for Candance on that scene when it originally aired, but you’ve managed to make her even more human and relatable.Excellent job. Hope to read more.

    4. Great job.maybe its was like challenge to candy, even though she new bette had a partner candy saw the wedding ring and thought lets see how far she can take it before bette told her NO. we need more please.

    5. Poor Candace. Sometimes risks are worth it, and sometimes they’re not. She knew what she was getting into, even when it was against her better judgment. Now she has her memories and hopefully, she will fine someone that all hers.

    6. I have never seen Candance as a ‘homewrecker’ even though the affair ended B&T. Bette rightly claims responsibility for her own actions. I have always felt sorry for Candance even though she did understand that Bette was in a realtionship before she slept with her. This is definitely a story in the making…

    7. It’s amazing how each time your version seems like what should have happen……Your ability to capture the true character in itself is remarkable. With Bette saying and I quote, “I would hate myself too much to let your love in…and certainly too much to let any love out.”, admits that she was able to love Candace but choice not to. And the fact that this story didn’t completely blame Candace for her part is such a good point. I always believe that she got a raw deal in the show.

    8. Great post, Sea. It seems that the “other woman” is always to blame (been there, done that) but it takes 2 and Bette holds her share of responsibility. she is the one who should have refused. I understand that it is hard when your world is falling down around you but it is NEVER a good idea to cheat. I think Bette learned that one! more please!!!!!
