Heart of Glass: After Parties
“Bette, you drive Helena back to your place.” Alice’s tone held a note of warning. Though her friend bristled over being ordered not only to host an after party at her house—on a work night no less—but also to drive a woman whom she did not want to drive, Alice persisted.
“Why can’t I come with you?” Helena asked quietly, taking Alice aside. The lights of The Planet shone garishly, after a night of dancing and drinking. Kit’s staff cleaned around Shane, Alice, Helena and Bette. Max and Tina escaped to get a good night’s sleep, but Bette was held captive as punishment no doubt, for never having visited Helena in prison.
The thing was, Helena didn’t really mind. She and Bette had come to a kind of silent agreement. Seemingly overnight—around the time of Helena’s firing from the movie studio—their previous mutual animosity had dissipated like fog on a windy day. One moment it hovered around them, inspiring razor sharp remarks and glances, the next it was simply gone. Helena missed Bette’s party for Jodi, and the two had barely seen one another in the time since. But when they did, a quiet warmth replaced the old chill.
Helena didn’t care that Bette hadn’t visited her. It made a strange kind of sense. Being her former nemesis, Bette may have wondered if seeing Helena in prison would just have been too embarrassing. Such double thinking seemed logical, strangely enough. Truth be told, Helena herself wasn’t certain that she would have wanted Bette Porter to see her in the worst state of her life.
They sat in Bette’s car, in annoyingly awkward silence, before Bette confirmed Helena’s thoughts.
Helena shrugged away an apology. “My hair was a mess and I had to wear prison orange. What on earth would we have talked about?”
“I should have visited anyway?” Bette asked meekly.
“No. Well…maybe. But I forgive you, and mostly agree with your decision.”
“Sor…”
“Shhhh…” Helena held a finger to Bette’s lips. “Alice is punishing you well enough.”
“How long do you suppose that will last?” Bette asked, a smile playing on the corners of her mouth. She glanced sideways at her driving companion, relieved to see that all was forgiven.

Hel I didnt expect this chapter so soon and I am so liking how you are going about with this story.
Loving it! I’m sending you copious amounts of love and worship right now. :-)
No, helebette not gyno anything, I should be so lucky. Echocardiography. I get to see quite a few chests (and whatever may be attached to them, like EKG leads) but mostly they are approaching 80 years old, so few thrills. And I must maintain my professional attitude regardless. But at least I got on A on ultrasound physics tonight! A little more worried about tomorrow’s, and here you are posting, which keeps me from my studies. Oh well, tomorrow’s another day! But in the meantime, I enjoy how this one proceeds, just a little drunk, just a little sly, just a little shy. Now bring me the others! And you, sofa-London Town! We’ve been more than patient. And God knows, I need a Vacation.
I’ve missed your posts big-time! Your explanation for Bette’s not visiting Helena in jail makes perfect sense. And I appreciate your acknowledging the emotional repercussions of the prison experience (I won’t be surprised if IC treats it as a big joke in Season 5). I love the tentative dance Bette and Helena are engaged in, and I hope this “fun tension” phase of their relationship isn’t short-lived. I’ve been impatiently waiting for four years and I still haven’t heard a single Belena comment escape IC’s lips, so what is the “mocking reference” to? Delighted to hear that your five stories are “in the works” because I’m mighty attached to them all.
Oooh, so close…. If Bette hadn’t come down with an awful, sudden case of foot-in-mouth disease, they could’ve gone there. Pity. Wonder how she’ll fix that gaffe, silly woman. Hels is the forgiving type it seems, so maybe she’ll let it slide… Or not. Very nice, hb, very nice. More as you can please, thanks!
hmmm
mmmm where are u going with this. I am intrigued. PPS.
I don’t like Tilena =P because of Tina, In a way I think she used Helena, to get back at Bette and I didn’t like Helena because she was Bette’s enemy (rolling eyes) but who knows, maybe you can change my mind heheh… This chapter was AMAZING!!! Bette’s explanation was perfect, I loved it!!! PPS
