    Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 3

“Danakins, where are you going?” Tonya asked, peeking into the bathroom later as Dana was blowdrying her hair.

    “Milk,” was Dana’s curt reply.

“Can I go, honey?” Tonya asked.

Dana bristled at the sound of her voice. “It’d be best if you didn’t. Tina’s having a crisis right now.” Dana told her, laying down the blowdryer and brushing past Tonay to retrieve her purse from the kitched counter.

“But sweetie…,” Tonya whined, following right on Dana’s heels.

Something inside of Dana snapped. “Can’t you just leave me alone for one minute? You’re always right on top of me! Can’t I have some ***** room to breathe?”

Tonya looked shocked. “But, but, Danakins…”

“And quit calling me that! I hate that damn nickname. It sounds ridiculous.”

Tonya took a step back. This was a side of Dana she’d never seen before; a side of Dana she didn’t even know existed. When had Dana gotten the balls to stand up for herself? “Dana, baby, calm down. Let’s sit down and talk this out over a nice dinner.”

“No, I’m going out with my friends,” Dana protested stubbornly.

Something in Tonya’s expression changed. “You’re choosing those ***** over me?”

Dana’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t you dare talk about them that way.”

“It’s true. They’re no good for you. They’re nothing but trouble, especially that ***** Shane and that two-faced ***** Alice. They’ll just take you from me.”

Dana started to slap Tonya, but caught herself in time. Seething with anger, she bit her lip.

Tonya went on. “Danakins, its either me or them. Choose. Right now.”

Dana turned away from her for a moment. Tonya smiled. Just as she thought, Dana was wimping out, as usual. “Now, honey, let’s just-.”

“Get out,” Dana interrupted coldly, her voice hard.

    “What?” Tonya asked in disbelief.

“You heard me. Go. Get your ***** and get out of my house.”

Tonya exploded. “You’re choosing them over me? What the ***** is wrong with you? You *****! I never loved you anyway! I just wanted your fame and your money. You make me sick!”
