Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 40
Shes a baby, Kit, Tina reminded her, as if that explained everything, leaning over to kiss Lucys nose. Was our little baby good for Aunt Kit last night?
Baby, my *****, Bette muttered as Lucy tugged at her pants leg with her teeth.
Thats nothing. Howie fed Little ***** and Stud some lunchmeat last night because he said they looked hungry. They both threw up on my bed, Dana lamented.
Ewww. Lara made a face.
It was gross, Alice confirmed.
Kit stood up. Im going to go get some more coffee and something for us to snack on. Any requests?
Ivan immediately jumped up. Let me help you.
Lucy leapt onto the spot Kit had just vacated. Bette watched as the pair headed toward the counter, nose wrinkling as she saw Ivan gently lay a hand on Kits lower back.
Tina, noticing her expression, warningly said, Bette, leave it alone.
Bette leaned back and sighed. Well, its just not right.
Hes sweet, Lara observed.
But Kit is straight, and she wants her, Bette argued.
Babe, Ivan thinks as himself as a man, therefore, out of respect, we should consider him one, too, Tina told her, moving over as Lucy stretched out across the couch for a nap.
But he isnt one! Bette burst out.
Bette, chill. There are all kinds of different people in the world. Ivans different from you, thats all. Thats doesnt make him a bad person or mean that he honestly doesnt really like your sister, Alice supplied.
Dana turned to Alice. Wow, that sounded almost…sensible.
Alice shrugged. Thanks. Sometimes it just happens, without me even trying. It’s kind of scary.
Bette watched as Ivan said something that made Kit laugh. Does she seem to like him? You know, in that way?
Lara glanced over. It looks like it to me.
Tina took Bettes hand. Love is blind, Bette, remember that. Some people may look down on us because we may not fight their ideal of a traditional couple, but that doesnt make our love any less valid, or make us any less happy together. Dont be so harsh and judgmental.
