    Held in Contempt Chapters 5-7

”Walking along the beach,” Tina replied. ”And lately I’ve even managed to stop pretending Nicole’s walking beside me.”

”Like you said, recovering from that kind of loss is a process,” Bette said.

”Sorry, I didn’t mean to go there tonight.”

”Tina. I loved kissing you. I wanted to start our evening that way so we could talk about whatever you wanted to talk about. It’s a date, but I can be your friend too, you know.”

Tina looked away so Bette couldn’t see the moisture gathering in her eyes. It took her a moment to be sure she could speak without the emotion taking over.

”I expected you to be…more self indulgent,” Tina said.

”To act as if I don’t care about your past?”

Tina nodded in reply. She didn’t trust herself to speak.

Bette reached to take Tina’s hand.

”Tina, look at me. It’s okay if you cry. You can cry with me.”

”It makes me feel weak,” Tina barely whispered.

”Do I seem so cold that you think your loss wouldn’t affect me too? I have such…empathy for you. If I think about it too much, it makes me cry and I’m not the one who lost my spouse of seven years.”

”I didn’t mean to imply you don’t care,” Tina replied. ”Or that you can’t care.”

    Tina fell silent.

”You expected an interaction with me to be a little less fraught with emotion,” Bette suggested. ”Because of who you perceived me to be.”

Tina met Bette’s gaze directly, and spoke with conviction.

”I expected to get laid and not get caught up in talking about why I’ve been celibate for so long,” Tina said.

”I’m sorry you were misled by my reputation.”

    ”I’m not sorry.”

    ”Good.”

The rest of what they both wanted to say remained unspoken. Their evening together was rich with tension and marked by frequent, very intentional, touches of a completely appropriate nature. And it ended with another kiss goodnight.

    Chapter 6

”It’s been a crazy week,” Bette said.

”I got called up to second chair a prosecution when one of the originally assigned lawyers declared a last minute conflict of interest,” Tina explained. ”The learning curve was steep.”

They hadn’t even had a chance to speak since they’d seen each other Saturday night.

    1. So pleased to see another post.

The authenticity of the Legal Scenes is of no consequence as the Courts in the UK and the US are not the same..

I look forward to reading any of your stories and as usual completely into this one and looking forward to the next post.

Thanks jks please keep them coming.

    2. Hi jks:

I love this story, I’ve read the one you told me amicus curiae, and it has some similarity at the beginning and I love it, but this is different, and I like this, also, very much, so clear and professional, I will be waiting for your update.

      Thanks

    3. I agree with pmulvey, don’t understand why you got tons of grief before.

I really enjoy this story and and the way their relationship develop. Bette gives Tina the space and time she needs. Love the way you portray her.

Looking forward to the next chapter!
