    CHAPTER 17

Jarek Wysocki rounded the corner of the darkened hall fully expecting to see Colvin hunched over her desk as he often saw her late on a weeknight. And she was there, of course, yet he was not prepared for how he would find her.

Her door was slightly ajar, the subtle flicker of her monitor projecting the only light in the room. At her right hand stood a highball glass with a generous amount of dark amber liquor. To her left, sat a small plate of something he couldn’t quite make out. He approached the door and stood awkwardly for a minute or two. It seemed like forever until she actually acknowledged him,

    "Wysocki."

He could tell by her exaggerated accent and the drawn out pronunciation of his name that she was probably well into her second glass of what he presumed to be scotch. He had only ever seen her drunk once. She wasn’t drunk tonight, not by a long shot; though she had certainly drunk enough to take the edge off.

"You want a drink?" Colvin attempted a smile as she motioned to the chair directly in front of her.

    "Why not?"

He watched as she poured a finger of scotch from a bottle somewhere within her desk. Her hand was steady, not that he expected otherwise. Her eyes were puffy and red, as though she had been crying. He hadn’t noticed it initially, but he couldn’t help but notice it now – Teresa looked tired and beaten down.

Jarek took a sip and settled back into the uncomfortable chair,

    "I took Lao’s deal."

"I expected you would. And I understand why you did."

"Do you? Because I sure as hell don’t. I made a deal with an underworld boss for a dead murderer. A lot of good that does me."

Teresa shrugged and snagged a treat Wysocki now recognized to be a red velvet cupcake from a plate of about a half dozen,

"Well, your case is closed. Daniel can finally rest knowing that the man who murdered his wife and son is long dead. There’s no pain of a trial and he can move on. Or at least try to."

    "What about Lao?"

"Lao will serve his reduced sentence, and when he screws up again, we’ll find a way to nail him." She handed Jarek a cupcake, which he took and chewed thoughtfully.

    1. This REALLY is a great story and I am soo happy that everyone is loving it as much as I am. You are a wonderful writer, scaf. You do such a great job of describing their thoughts, mannerisms, and personality quirks. The reader can actually picture them sitting there in Teresa’s office having this conversation. Once again, wonderful job and thank you soo much for taking on this extraordinary story. PPS!!! :)

    2. Yeah!!!!! and thank you for a mid week post. You are developing the story and the characters so well — this is much more entertaining than the TV show – at least I don’t think you will be cancelled!! Looking forward to next chapter.

    3. Thank u scaf for the update, it is really a struggle for Teresa to deal with her feelings, she is complex, and u do perfect work with her :)Please don’t make us wait too long for the next chapter ;D

    4. How can it be that the one chapter with NO Teresa/Tina interaction is my favorite? Who knew Jarek could be so sweet & actually give Teresa the kick in the pants she needed. It was so sad that Teresa said everyone leaves and used Jarek as an example ( I cried a bit). But onward and upward…. What happens when Teresa reveals her true feelings to Tina? Is Tina a forgiving soul or one to hold a grudge? Post soon… Can’t take suspense ;-)

    5. just caught up and just like many of your readers i freakin love this fic… i havent seen chicago code but i already like Jarek and his humor and the way he treats Teresa with utmost respect and affection. you are definitely a very good writer and im sooo excited for your next post. thanks

    6. So happy he made her see the light. Now Teresa needs to grovel and crawl if necessary, which I don’t think it will be. Tina is open to the apology, hopefully and will accept it and Teresa with warm, open loving arms and much love and understanding. Thanks for the extra pages it was wonderful to have the length. Great update. Thanks for posting.

    7. I guess it would be to much to ask for more chappys ok i am selfish. anyway this is one of my fav stories. It was my very favorite tv show. Hey maybe they will pick up your story for a new season! Great chapter as always>

    8. Good God I love this fic! Screw the show, this version is wayyyy betterrrr! Who’da thought Jarek of all people would give such good relationship advice? Lol. I like this Jarek better the TCC Jarek. Both equally as awesome but your Jarek has a more softer side. Love it. Keep it up!

    9. I always thought The Chicago Code needed to delve at least a little bit into Teresa’s personal life, and this story is the perfect fix. Just read from the start today, and I am hooked. Thank you for this story, and please keep the chapters coming.
