Chapter 1
“You have the audacity to question my authority?”
A male colleague shifted angrily as Bette Porter scoffed at his attitude toward her expertise. He didn’t think she had any. Even as young as Bette was in her late twenties, she had kept herself very busy in her professional field, and she was a reputable and well-established professor.
The man standing across from her in his late thirties looked perturbed by not only her age, but by her attractive exterior as well. Was he angry with her for her beauty?
“I can question any damn thing I please,” he barked back at her.
“I know this is one of my first weeks here, but-”
“Listen, this isn’t an age thing,” he insisted, still hinting at Bette’s assumed naivety in teaching, and in everything else.
“Oh, so it’s just a sex thing then?” Bette knew he was sexist from the first thing he ever said to her: It’s nice to have a new woman professor around. He’d been looking her over as she shook his hand that first day. It hadn’t been a pleasant introduction.
Suddenly, in the middle of their current argument, a beautiful woman occupied the entrance to Bette’s new square office. She stood there for a moment while both professors turned to her, the beige-brown colors of the walls emphasizing the woman’s warm tone of dark brown hair. Both professors awaited the stranger’s explanation for intruding, and at the same time, they were both glad she had. She was breathtaking.
“Sex?” the woman smiled with a cheeky glow that confused and aroused the new professor. Helena had her eyes on Bette. Then she slipped them over to the man and straightened her posture. “What’s wrong with you? Have you got a problem?”
Bette tried not to smile as the man looked angrily in the young woman’s intrusion, as if he felt all women were now out to get him en masse. “I wasn’t talking to you.”
“Well perhaps you should think about who you speak down to,” the brunette suggested, staring the man down even as she held out her hand for introduction. “Helena Peabody.”
The man’s face went white as he realized that Peabody was a large name for monetary donations at the university. And money was always important. He mumbled his apologies for a moment before Helena continued.

This story is set years before Bette and Helena are married to begin with, so we won’t see Tina enter this situation for many chapters to come. Thank you for your interest.
I am so happy that you are once again posting here. You’re a talented writer and your stories are just the best. I am a Tibetter but I do enjoy a well-written story involving Bette w/Helena or the Senator. PPS. A joy to read.
The Senator – now THAT was a confident woman. She was very interesting to me. Are there any stories on this site you would recommend with the Senator as a leading character?
If you’re looking for a well written story about Bette w/The Senator, I recommend “Pick-Up Styx” by pancha305. Pancha was a HS teacher (English or History, not sure) who was an excellent writer. Unfortunately, she passed away a few years ago way before her time. Her stories are great. Some folks didn’t appreciate her going against canon, pairing Bette w/someone other than Tina but a well-written story is a well-written story, IMO.
I love his stories, I will wait

I have enjoyed reading the Bette/Helena stories on this site. Although I love TiBette I don’t mind reading about pairing Bette or Tina with someone else especially if they are well written like this one

Bette and Helena certainly have a draw, and the couple in “The Professor” were a train wreck, so building up to that has been very interesting to write.
So glad to see you returned with another intriguing story. I am always happy to read some BeLena even when they didn’t work out in your first story due to Helena being really cruel there must have been a time when Helena was able to capture Bette’s heart, for them to get married. So I am looking forward to see your story unfold. Just checked the site for one of my favorite stories, which was about Bette and Barbara Grisham but sadly it’s no longer available. Perhaps you would consider writing a story about the senator and Bette. It would have been so much better to see Bette in a relationship with the senator than Jodie, in my opinion. But anyway thank you so much for sharing so many exceptional stories with us and I am looking forward to read your next chapter.
I will consider a story with the Senator and Bette, but I`m not sure when I will have time to write that. I like the idea, though. Thank you for the vote of confidence that I might do the couple justice.

I went back and re-read “The Professor.” I’m starting to see now the seeds (roots, weeds) of their disastrous relationship in that story. Prequels must be difficult I’d think, you really must stay true to the “through line” of their characters in the previous tale.

I had not read ‘The Professor’ so I went back and read it and enjoyed it. I will now read this prequel with interest as to how the characters reached the state of their relationships at the start of the previous story.
