If it is meant to be…Chapter 9

Tina just stood there shaking her head. “Bette, this is so nice of you. You didn’t have to rent a limo for us though.”

Bette just smiled at Tina. “It’s fine Tina. I didn’t rent it. I have a service that provides me with a car and driver.”

“I thought you said you take taxis everywhere?”

Bette grinned. “Well…what can I say…I like knowing who is driving me around…and…I like knowing that I am sitting on clean seats!”

Tina started laughing. “Now there’s the Bette Porter I know and love!” Oops…realizing what she just said, and suddenly too nervous to see what Bette’s response was, Tina tried to transition to the next conversation, hoping Bette didn’t notice what she was doing. “Come on Bette, I’ll introduce you to the kids.” She walked quickly past Bette, out to the driveway.

Bette on the other hand was rooted to the spot. ‘Did she just say that she loved me? Ok, relax Bette. It’s just a saying. People say it all the time…Now there’s the so and so I know and love. Don’t read anything into it!’ Bette turned and walked out to the car where Tina’s two younger children were jumping in, and then back out of the car, asking Mike all kinds of questions. While the boy wanted to know how fast the car went, the girl wanted to know if she could use the glasses in the mini bar to have something to drink during the ride. Tina gathered them both up and brought them over to Bette.

“Bette, this is Paul and Alexandra. Paul, Alex, this is my friend Bette Porter.” Bette smiled at both children, seeing Tina in their eyes as they both looked at her. Paul straightened himself up to his full height and reached out his hand to Bette. “It’s nice to meet you Ms. Porter. Thanks for letting us ride in your car, it’s slammin!”

Bette laughed as she returned Paul’s handshake. How sweet was he?! Such a gentleman, but still a kid. Bette could see why Tina had said she adored him. “It’s nice to meet you as well Paul, and I’m glad you like the car. Hey, maybe it would be Ok with Mike if you backed it out of the driveway.” Bette looked over at Mike who had heard the exchange and she gave him a look that said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll pay for any damage.’ At that, Paul hopped up and down a couple of times and looked over at his Mom. “Oh man, can I Mom?”

Tina just shook her head. “Oh God Paul. All right, but wait til we are all ready, and BE CAREFUL.” “I will Mom…thanks,” Paul yelled as he ran back into the house to help with the rest of the suitcases, all of a sudden very excited about leaving.

Bette looked down at Alex, who had positioned herself right in front of Tina, holding her hand, leaning back against her and swaying back and forth. “Hi Alex, it is very nice to meet you.” Alex, felt very shy all of a sudden and only managed a small, “Hi.” Bette smiled at her and said, “That is a beautiful dress you have on. Did you pick that out yourself?” Alex’s eyes got really round, as she look at the immaculate outfit that Bette was wearing, and then looked back down at her dress. “You think so? I did pick it out myself.” Bette smiled, “Well Alex, you have very good taste.” Alex turned her head up and looked at Tina beaming from Bette’s compliment. She very quietly said, “Thanks…” and then took off running for the house, just like Paul.

Tina just stood there with her arms folded, shaking her head. “God Bette! Five minutes with my kids and you have charmed them all. What is it about you?”

Bette just laughed and raised her eyebrows at Tina. “Well it probably helps that they have your genes….I always did have a way with those Kennard genes!” They both laughed at that and walked back into the house. While Tina supervised the rest of the loading of the car, Bette took a couple of minutes to talk with Susan, as she had decided not to go to the airport, since Bette was taking them. As they were hugging good-bye, Susan looked at Bette and said, “I hope to see much more of you Bette.” She looked over at her sister. “Tina will kill me for saying this, but there’s still love there Bette.”

Bette’s eyes filled with tears. “I still love her too Susan, but so much has happened. We live two very different life’s on two different coasts. Fifteen years is a long time, and our history together ended horribly…I just don’t know…maybe some things are just not meant to be.

Susan looked at the woman her sister loved with all her heart. “Maybe not Bette…but maybe, just maybe…they are.”

    1. Excellent chapter. Bette has cold feet? I am sure once the water has been tested it will be clear entry. I liked the little push from Susan. I also liked Bette coming to the house to see The Love Of Her Life To See Her Before She Leaves for Seattle. I am in agreement with carolann we should of known that Bette would of had a Car Service! She is a wise business Woman. The kids are adorable and they just melted in that Porter Charm. Have a way with the Kennard Genes. She will have her way once again. True Love. Thanks for the chapter and for posting tonight since you just posted one on Wed. Can’t wait for the KISS at the Airport, to say I will Call You.
