If it makes you happy – Chapter 20
“What?” Bette asked quizzically as Tina’s gaze rested on her longer than normal.
“It’s nothing.” Tina dismissed the thought and looked down at her empty dessert plate.
“You know I’m not going to let you get away with that.” Bette stated lightheartedly.
Tina bit her lip and contemplated whether or not to declare her thoughts. Somehow she’d forgotten how observant Bette could be when her attention wasn’t divided. When Bette paid attention, she could read her ex-wife’s expressions like a book and with that knowledge Tina took a deep breath and exhaled slowly.
“Thank-you” She said simply with a small shrug of her shoulders.
“For what?” Bette asked, having gained no insight at all.
“There are dozens of reasons for me to thank you but right now I’m grateful to be here with you.” Tina knew that a few years ago there would be no chance of her thanking Bette for having dinner with her in the small Italian restaurant off Washington. She found it shabby and the service sub-par for the prices being charged but she had thought long and hard about where to take Bette for their first date and not only was this an old favorite of Bette’s, it also held a lot of happy memories.
“I was a little surprised when you suggested this place.” Bette responded.
“I thought it might be good for us to go somewhere that we haven’t been for a long time.”
Bette only nodded in response and watched as Tina’s brow creased.
“Unless you’ve been here with Abby or someone else?” Tina added hastily as her mind began to race at the thought of Bette bringing another woman to one of ‘their’ places.
“No” Bette assured in a quiet voice, “The last time I was here it was with you.”
Tina felt her shoulders drop with relief.
“How many years has it been?” Bette asked as she searched her memory for the last time they had frequented the small restaurant with its quaint alfresco courtyard.
Tina turned slightly to look around the courtyard, now crowded with groups of patrons who filled all of the tables.
“We were sitting at that table by the wall.” Tina said as she nodded over her right shoulder, two down from the end. “It was the weekend before you started at the CAC and you were…a little apprehensive about what you were doing.”

Yes, that is definitely better. Thank you for writing this wonderful story. Can’t wait for the next post.
I certainly think it’s better. Very nice update, thanks for posting.
Firstly good on Abby, Bette sucks. I wonder if she actually told Tina that Abby dumped her sorry butt and that she is actually with Bette by default.
Sweet. I couldn’t remember if this was your B/T story but I’m glad it was.. very mature conversation about their past. However, the end really made me smile.
yes, much better with the hand holding :)
Sweet. PPS
lovely :) thanks for an update.
Subtle, sweet, and carefree. Please continue…
Thanks for the update. I do need to go back and read the prior chapters because I seem to have forgotten all of it, and even reading this lovely chapter didn’t bring it back.
Yes indeed, always better with a subtle yet telling display of affection. Funny that any physical contact can be such a hopeful sign. Thanks again for the story!
I found Bette and Tina’s conversation sweet and healing to some degree. The hand holding at the end was the perfect note.
Thank you for taking time to write and share. Really.
