    In Repair – Chapter 22

Plucking up her courage, Bette called out softly, “ Helena. “

“ Yes? “ Helena responded, turning away from the window.

    “ I… uhh… “ Bette hesitated, “ I think that you look great in that blouse. “

Helena looked at Bette unconvincingly, forcing a polite smile, she said, “ Thank you. You look great too. “

    Awkward silence.

Stop being such an idiot, Bette bit on her lower lip.

    “ I’m sorry. “ Bette sputtered out.

“ Sorry? About what, Bette? “

Bette took a deep breath, “ Helena, I’m sorry about how I walked away from you. I’m sorry for being so insensitive towards you. “

Helena looked at Bette blankly as she processed what Bette had just said.

“ It’s okay. “ She muttered, turning her attention to the traffic outside.

Bette wasn’t expecting such a response from Helena. In fact, she didn’t know what kind of response she had expected from Helena.

“ It’s okay? “ Bette asked in a questioning but gentle tone.

“ Yeah. “ Helena gave her a faint smile, “ I mean, I can’t go on being angry and upset with you. I’m happy for you and Jodi. Besides, I think that we’re better off as friends. “

“ But, I don’t want to be fr… “  Bette stopped herself in time.

Maybe now wasn’t the best time to confess. She didn’t want to ruin anything now that Helena’s willing to talk to her, to look her in the eye and to be friends.

“ You don’t want what? “ Helena prompted.

“ Uhh… I… I don’t want to… “ Bette sputtered, searching her brain for something to cover up for her mistake.

“ I don’t want to mention that Jodi and I broke up. “ She added quickly.

“ That’s just awful. I’m really sorry to hear about it. “ Helena responded in a comforting tone,“ Are you alright? “

Bette smiled softly, “ Yes, I’m fine. It was sort of a mutual thing. “

“ Right. Okay, I’m glad to hear that you’re fine. “ Helena smiled.

The rest of the car ride became less awkward as Helena became less tense. Bette, on the other hand, was enjoying Helena’s company, listening attentively to her as she shared stories about Jun Ying and Wilson.
