    Their eyes met. And held.

Bette struggled to find herself and to speak.

“You sound as if you know your way around a vineyard,” Bette said softly, with a smile, and involuntarily reaching out her hand to the woman. Because she so much wanted to touch her. “Hi, I’m Bette Porter. I’m the Director of the CAC…”

“Yes, I gathered as much from seeing you mill about earlier. It’s very nice to meet you. I’m …”

“Ms. Porter! Ms. Porter!” a voice interrupted. “I thought you’d like to know. We’ve just reached our goal. $100,000! Can you believe it? $100,000!”

    Chapter 3

Alice and Johnathan stood in line at the tasting table.

“So you didn’t tell me? Whaddaya criticize, J.T.?” Alice asked him again.

“A bit of everything, Alice. Music, food, wine, art, theatre, movies. You name it. I critique it,” Johnathan answered.

“ A ‘J.T. of All Critques’, eh?” Alice responded. “Instead of a ‘Jack of All Trades’?”

“I guess you could say so,” Johnathan replied, smiling as they inched forward.

    “Are you harsh?” Alice inquired.

Johnathan looked at her quizzically, taking a sip of wine.

“Are you a bitch?” Alice clarified. “Do you send the victim of your criticisms ‘up shit critique’?”

Johnathan laughed. “What are you asking, Alice?”

“Are you scathing Or caustic?” she said, looking up into his blue eyes, rimmed with long dark lashes.

“I don’t try to be,” he replied, standing tall and finishing off his glass. “But I do try to tell the truth as I see it. Of course, that is only an opinion.”

“Were you a big Liberace fan?” Alice asked with a sly smile.

Johnathan laughed. “In the worst way,” he said, before continuing. “I suppose that’s your way of asking if I’m gay?”

    Alice nodded. “Yep, you’re good!”

Sighing, Johnathan seemed pensive for a moment. “I’ve always regretted not seeing his last performance in New York at Radio City. I had tickets. But my lover and I had a spat and I gave them up to some good friends. He died.”

“Yeah, he died three months later. I was actually a big Liberace fan too,” Alice confided.

“Liberace did pass three months later. But it was my lover I was referring to,” Johnathan confessed sadly.

    1. I have no problem picturing Helena being a wine connaisseuse. I have no problem picturing Helena vacationing in the French country at a villa with vineyards. I do have a hard time picturing Helena laboring in the fields harvesting grapes on a regular basis. She’s probably too young to have known Cesar Chavez. But I’m willing to let you convince me, zheese.

    2. He Zheese, I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. Helena can always put the cat among the pigeons with Bette so i am excited to see how these gals will taunt and tease each other before succumbing to the intense physical desire that attracts them. They are flies needing to get to each other’s flames. Passion will warm their hearts and souls but they need to remember that it can also burn. Baby, let the fires ignite and glow. Many thanks for this intriguing premise. I really can’t wait but will have to until your next hot post. Your Loyal Fan.
