Interesting Curves 1 (formerly Untitled 1)

Tina walked into the club alone. She scanned along the walls, and found Alice, staking out one of the few tables. Screwing up her courage, Tina walked up to the table. “Hey there.” The words were shouted over the dance music.

    “Hey. You’re here.”

“Is it that much of a surprise?”

“Well, Bette had said, you know, that you might be by, but I was a little skeptical.”

Why wouldn’t she have come, Tina wondered. And why would Alice care? Of course, Bette had invited her. Offered to drive, even. Tina wasn’t quite sure she was ready to be that alone with Bette Porter. Instead she said that she might make it, but that she could drive herself.

And speaking of Ms. Porter. “Is Bette here?”

“She was running a little late from the gallery. That’s not unusual.”

“I suppose.” And how was Alice so privy to information about Bette’s work schedule?

“I’m sure she’s coming, though. She almost never misses a Friday.”

    “Is that so?”

“Sure. That’s usually her best night to, well, you know.”

Perhaps Tina didn’t exactly know, but she did have a feeling about what Alice was discussing. For a woman like Bette Porter, accomplished and glamorous, after all, she shouldn’t be surprised that she was just one of many that caught Bette’s eye.

    “Oh. Of course.”

“But I’m sure she’ll be glad you’re here. She’s talked about you and stuff.”

Again, Tina wasn’t fully convinced that having been ‘talked about’ was a good thing.

“Maybe I should go.” Go, as in run, quickly, for the door, head home, put her skirt and silk blouse in the closet for a trip to the dry cleaners, pull a pint of Ben & Jerry’s from the freezer, and try to pretend that this evening never happened.

    “Ok.”

As she left the table, Alice looked confused. Tina was sure she’d tell Bette that she was there. Would it matter? It was Friday night, and Tina still didn’t even want to contemplate what that meant in the world of Bette Porter.

She’d just made it out the door – just in time, too, as the air in the club seemed to lack oxygen, choke off her breathing – when she found herself caught up in the arms of a woman. A soft grasp, but an intentional detention nonetheless.

    1. Pseud, come on, with the way you wrote this first chapter, how could you possibly NOT continue??? What would it take to make you continue and continue soon??? LOL PPS

    2. Tina runs better than a fair percentage of the US Olympic track team. Bette might have to run a longer race than she’d like to counter Tina’s sprint.

    3. “Might”? I think the word you were likely looking for, pseud, was “will”. I’ll be reading, as will many other folks. Thanks for this one, and the other stories you’ve posted recently. Cheers

    4. Wow, I wish I could say stress got me writing, it unfortunately has the opposite effect on me….Sorry to hear you’re stressed, but glad it produced another story, can’t wait for more!!
