Intervention
No one but the Maître d’ himself escorted Peggy Peabody to her table in this newly renown establishment.
As they walked past the filled tables late that evening, Peggy noticed a striking woman out of the corner of her eye.
The woman’s head was bowed over the three olive martini in front of her. She sat alone and anxiously rubbing her neck.
Startled at the recognition of someone familiar, Peggy stopped at the woman’s tableside.
“Well, Bette Porter as I live and breathe.”
Looking up from her martini and denying the daze from the vodka, the stem of the glassware laced between her other hand’s fingers, Bette’s eyes grew wide before she smiled.
“Hello, Peggy!”
Peggy quickly glanced at the empty seat across from Bette. She also noticed two empty glasses sitting adjacent to the martini she was nursing.
“Where is your dinner companion, Bette?”
Bette looked across at the vacant seat which Peggy had espied. She squeezed the tense muscles in her neck.
“I’m here alone, Peggy. It appears I’ve been stood up.”
Curious, Peggy took a deep breath and quietly slipped into the unattended chair.
She looked up at the Maître d’. “This will do, Monsieur. Bring me a lovely Boodles straight up,” she commanded, waving the Maître d’ off with a strained but polite smile and a flick of the wrist. “Post haste,” she added.
Peering across the table to a surprised Bette, Peggy inquired, “You don’t mind, do you, dear?”
Bette’s round eyes lowered to her drink. She nonchalantly picked up the trio of skewered olives in her drink and slid one off with her teeth.
“Of course not, Peggy,” she replied hesitantly, after swallowing. “It’s an unexpected pleasure.” The hand which had been relieving the tension in her neck relaxed and lowered to her side.
Peggy picked up her napkin, flourishing it in air, and placing it in her lap. She then proceeded to straighten the silverware, fingering it genteelly.
Bette carefully watched her.
Delicately caressing the linen in her lap, Peggy looked at Bette carefully and smiled as she relaxed against the back of the leather-padded chair.
