“Its hard to fathom out “ Rosemary said
“Mom – I feel bad about feeling the way I do. Tina is happy for her mom – she is not concerned about it – she says it will be good for her ego”
“Really ?”
“Yes – she shamed me last night – I ripped into Helena and I nagged her to make Emma tell Tina because I didn’t want to be the person who either told her or kept a secret. I don’t want to keep any secrets from Tina – she’s my partner and I don’t think we should have secrets “
Rosemary looked at her daughter “There can be secrets between couples – as long as they are not harmful – it’s a rocky road “
“Do you have secrets from my father ?”
“I knew you would ask me that “
“And ?”
“And you are not going to tell your father this are you ?”
Bette raised her eyebrows at her mother “No “
“Lets just say that I dated a man before your father who your father would not like to know had kissed me “
Bette smiled “ You sly old fox mom “
“I had my moments – you get your stunning looks from me you know “
“I know I do “ Bette said – she sighed “ Mom – I just have a bad feeling about this – it could go so wrong “
“What’s the worst that could happen – Bette I am not sure how I feel about it either – it sounds so unlikely “
“What I think will happen is that Helena will enjoy herself with Emma for a while – long enough for Emma to fall for her and then she will get bored or a stunning young lesbian will throw themselves at her and she will be off – and I will use a phrase my grandfather used – she will be off like a rat up a drainpipe “
Rosemary laughed “it’s a long time since I heard that phrase “
“I remember him using it and I just loved the image it conjured up “ Bette laughed
“So after Helena shots up the diamond encrusted drainpipe ? – what do you see happening then ?”
“Regardless of what Emma says and what Tina says – Emma is going to get hurt – its going to be real fun to be between Tina and Helena “
“I hardly think that Tina will blame you “
“No but she will blame Helena – damn it mom – Helena should have more freaking sense”
“I hardly think that Emma had to be tied down “
Bette rubbed her eyes “That is an image that I would rather not indulge in “
“Sorry darling “
Bette smiled “ I just don’t want Emma to get hurt and yes it will make my life easier if my lover and my best friend get on “
“You wouldn’t be able to choice would you – I think that’s the difference between Tina and all the other women “
“I have dumped women just for hating Helena “
“I know that “ Rosemary said “And you loved her “
“I love Helena- she’s the sister I never had and she means the world to me”
“But against Tina ?”
Bette shook her head “As you say – Tina is different – Tina is the woman I want to spend my life with – I worship her – you know that mom “
“I do – and its mutual – she adores you”
“I don’t want Helena’s hound-dogging to mess things up with Ti “
“I don’t think she is trying to do that “
“What side are you on in this ?”
“Your’s and Tina – I think its surreal. I can see what Emma sees in Helena – I mean – she is stunning. Emma is also beautiful but I am not sure what Helena sees in Emma “
“If you work it out give me a call “ Bette said dryly
“I guess we will just have to support Emma – as you say it does seem in Helena’s make up to flit between women “
“She needs to settle down “
“And you think she won’t settle with Emma ?”
Bette snorted “Such a funny woman mom “
“I have my moments darling – think Helena has told Peggy yet ?”

Peggy does have a point there, Helena’s most important relationship is with Bette and by sleeping with Emma that relationship is in danger, no woman before were able to break that friendship but now with Helana playing with Emma, there is a possibility that their friendship will change. And it was already changing a bit because Bette found her love of her life in Tina, and it seems Helena is jealous of that relationship, Bette is settling and Helena isn’t.
Love the talk between Bette and Rosemary.

Peggy at her best! She made some interesting points. I guess she’s right. Even if Helena likes Tina, she is losing some parts of her bff. Naturally Bette does spend less time with Helena and her priorities how she spends her free time have changed. I’m curious how her fling with Emma goes on.
Rosie is a gem. Her reaction to Bette relevation was hilarious.

You are doing some great writing. I can just imagine sitting near these conversations between Bette and her mom and then Helena and Peggy and being entertained the entire time. Your setting of the scene, describing facial features…raised eyebrows and the entertaining conversations makes me laugh. Thanks so much for the entertaining mom and daughter discussion. I also think Peggy is spot on!
The fact that Helena and Bette’s relationship as BFF is waning is a natural phenomenon in human progression through the stages of life. Most people simply do not maintain their BFFs from their dating days into their committed couple days.. The reason is that because human form friendship circles with those who are most like we are – single people generally hang with single people. married folks generally hand with married folks. As one friend transitions from the single life into the married life, interest change on a subtle and but on continuous manner. Singles hangouts and parties becomes less attractive to those in committed relationships; after all committed people are no longer looking for someone but now have someone. The desires to be with your love interest simply takes time away from all your single friends, so they go their way and less time together is a natural phenomena. Sure Bette and Tina include Helena in some things but there is a whole lot of their life which they want to be exclusively with each other. They will spend less time with parents, friends, pushing their careers in order to be with each other.
That being said, is it possible that Helena subconsciously sees that Bette is moving on with her life and knows the day is not too far into the future that their friendship will simply not be a priority in Bette’s life. Therefore in order to lessen the pain of the process, Helena has chosen a vehicle by which Bette will be able to put their friendship as a lessor priority abruptly rather than a painful gradual process for both of them. That vehicle is to date Emma where Bette will clearly choose Tina over Helena. This would relieve Bette of any guilt feeling for deserting her best friend in order to pursue the love of her life. This would put the diminishing of their friendship clearly on the head of Helena and not Bette and accomplish that which is going to occur as a matter of life processes. If consciously done, its an incredible gift of friendship – provided it works. It gives Bette a rational reason not be around Helena as much. If gives Tina reason for Helena not to be her best friend simply because she is Bette’s best friend.
Peggy on the other hand is motivated to give Helena advice for her to break it off with Emma for different reasons. She views Bette as her second daughter and as her daughter’s best friend. If Bette severs the relationship with Helena for whatever reason, she severs the family relationship with Peggy. This is not acceptable to Peggy and yet this is bound to happen in the normal course of life. Bette will always be friends with Peggy because of their professional life, but close personal family relationship is contingent on Helena. So its in Peggy’s best interest for Helena not to disrupt her friendship with Bette.
And there is always a chance the Helena and Emma have that kindred spirit that could work to form a long term relationship. If that were true, then Helena would maintain her best friend relationship with Bette, Peggy would maintain her surrogate parental relationship with Bette and Tina would get a new step-mother in Helena.
This is a very interesting dynamic of human relationships. The above is based upon what I have observed in human behavior. Just a thought!!
