    Jess — Plan B; pt. 91

Something was just bugging me all morning. By lunchtime, I knew I had to take care of it. I mean, she did it once, I wasn’t going to let her get away with it again.

     “Hello?”

As if nothing’s wrong. “Porter, we’ve got to talk.”

“And good afternoon to you, too, Jess.”

“After I called you. You didn’t call back. And you know, I was nice enough to wait until noon to call again; I didn’t want to call you in the middle of the night.”

    “Excuse me?”

Yeah, like she’s so innocent. “You know, since the time zone change to New York and all that. I didn’t want to call first thing in the morning.”

    “Jess?”

    “What?”

“New York time is three hours later than California.”

Later? Geez, I always mess that up. Doesn’t matter. “We’ve still got to talk.”

    “Okay. I’d like that.”

You’d like to get yelled at? You’re one strange woman, Porter.

“But first I would like to apologize for not calling you back. I had a few problems with my phone.”

    Huh? “Problems? What problems?”

“It’s nothing important now, Jess. What would you like to talk about?”

It’s hard being mad at someone when they’re not mad back, that’s all I have to say.

“Well, some of it’s about the stuff that we talked about, and some’s like some other stuff.”

“Most any stuff you want to talk about, then.”

    “So you’ll talk.”

    “Yes, but Jess?”

    “Hmm?”

    “Aren’t you in school?”

Uh, so? “They do give us a lunch time.”

“Why not eat your lunch, then, and we can talk later.”

“How do I know you’ll call me back this time?”

“Jess, I can call, but I’d rather meet you somewhere.”

“Huh? Meet?” Does she realize I don’t own a jet?

“I’m back in Los Angeles, Jess.”

Oh, uh, yeah, meet. “Uh, okay. Meet where?”

“Judging by your call, I’d imagine your mother said something.”

As if, Porter. Basically, my mother, like always, said just a little but mostly nothing. “Maybe a little.” Very, very little.

“So meeting at your house is probably not the best idea.”

    Understatement again, Porter.

“I’ve got a few things to do this afternoon. Can you meet me back at my hotel?”

    “Hotel?”

“Okay, so maybe transportation would be a problem.”

“I don’t think mom’d be that interested in driving me.” Putting it mildly.

“Do you know if Shane’s home, Jess?”

    “I think she’s on a shoot.”

“Can you get into her house?”

“Yeah, I can.” Like even if I didn’t know about the key under the flowerpot, I probably could go to the coffee place down the street and find six women with keys.

“Let’s meet at Shane’s at four, then.”

“Uh, four, ok.” Why does this seem way too easy?

“Just do one favor for me, Jess.”

    “Favor?”

“Tell your mom what you’ll be doing. I don’t want her to worry.”

Yeah, like there’s nothing you’re doing to worry her Porter. “Uh, okay.”

    “Okay, then. Four at Shane’s.”

Tell mom. I promised to tell mom. I think a note would work. A note at the bottom of sock drawer, maybe. If I split from school before my last class, I can do that before he gets home from work, and then chill at Shane’s.

Four, Porter. We’ll see what you have to say for yourself, then.

    1. I am 100% with Gumby, Tina needs to remove her head from her ass! This is a good thing that Jess confided in Bette and Tina needs to suck it up and think about her daughter and not her self…Keep the chapters coming I like the one page thing, it keeps me wanting more, so keep posting the way you do and I will keep reading. Thanks a bunch.

    2. Porter? Porter? If I’d called my mother by her last name, or any other name besides ‘mama’, I would have been shot. Jess should show more respect for Bette. Thanks!

    3. Three intelligent women, all with three entirely different views on what’s happening. It kind of reminds me of that Abbott and Costello conversation about “Who’s on first”. Jess will continue to call Bette “Porter” until there is sufficient trust and reason for her to call her something else. She’s still feeling her way around the entire relationship with Bette.Tina needs to talk to Bette, but not just double talk or innuendo. She needs to ask specific questions if she wants to know what’s going on or what Bette is feeling.Bette needs to be more clear to Tina as well, but there also needs to be a level of understanding of how Tina may feel that her relationship with Jess has been usurped. She can still be Jess’ mother, she just has to understand where Tina is coming from.Jess needs to realize that her mother is not always perfect and that perhaps she has some culpability in all of this. Jess just assumes that it’s all Bette that is causing the friction. Jess also needs to understand her slightly duplicitous behavior as well in all of this. The fact that Jess is the one that went to New York and that she is the on that didn’t want to talk to Tina should be evidence enough that perhaps she is more a player in this than she thinks she is.Should Jess get her Moms to talk? I don’t know that you can make someone do something they might not want to do…but you can certainly lay the ground work and plant the seed that allows them to see that they should talk all on their own.Fantastic chapter, pseud. Can’t wait for more.

    4. Always makes my day to see that you’ve left an update no matter how short. How is it that Jess has become the adult here. She’s trying to talk to Bette and TIna figure out whats going on. I’m glad Bette’s back in town but why doesn’t Tina know? Tina by the way needs to get a grip and cut Bette some slack, its like she’s looking for every opportunity she can to blame her for something, or accuse her of not being honest, whatever, how many times does she want to loose Bette. Time for those two to really talk, maybe Jess can arrange the meeting and tell them both to get over it so they can work on being a family.

    5. pseud..I will take one page a day. Thank you for anything you give us and I can’t wait to see what happens with Jess and Bette. please give us more over the weekend.. albeez..I am heading to bed..I am foofed out.

    6. fergz honey you foofed me out also. psued – god please let someone talk. i mean these are supposedly intelligent people. so glad porter is back in town. go get your woman dammit. thanks honey

    7. This is like my favorite Tina and Bette story of all. I understand why Jess calls her Porter… but the day she calls her mom will be so beautiful.Keep it up pseud! I love it.

    8. Oh Jess how I would love to have a kid like you one day, okay okay I know she gets into an awful lot of trouble but compared to most kids she’s one of the good ones. Plus she is really smart and gets into the right amount of mischief. I think Bette needs to be a bit more specific about what constitutes ‘tell your mum’ coz technically a note is informing her even if it happens to be put somewhere no one will find it. Not to sure in which world they think Tina isn’t going to just march next door if she knows they’re there. Jess needs to tell her she’s seeing Bette, that’s all these 3 need – more Tina paranoia! Keep posting no matter how long, I love this story too much!

    9. This story just keeps getting better, and better, and better…you leave us rivoted! I can’t wait to hear what Bette has to say. I’m glad Bette is meeting with Jess. Biy is Tina going ot be pissed…but I can’t say that she doesn’t deserve it.

    10. Glad to see that Bette is back in LA. Something tells me that Jess’ little talk with Bette will bring more drama first where Tina is concerned. Tina still feels that Jess should be talking to her instead of B. Maybe it’s time for Jess to tell Tina off. Her moms really need to talk and deal with the issues, together!

    11. i agree with lwsho2005 this is a strange tina wants to be so controlling of jess and she wants bette to fix in her way or no way it seems–my girls when in hs changed almost daily once boys got into the picture–and we had the sex talk many times especially about safe sex then when the word controception was used my honor role daughter asked what that was–teens just process info differently than adults–just remember what it was like when a teen—i use to woory every time i was late each month thinking i was pregant: i wasn’t even dating yet–i worried since 7th gr until my jr yr and wised up
