    Chapter 38

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Tina asked as she laid her hand on Bette’s leg, the car engine purred as it sat in the driveway of Lily’s house.

“Yeah, it has to be done…”

“Maybe, but it doesn’t ‘have’ to be done today…”

“I know, but I actually feel okay about it…, I feel uh…, are you okay with doing this?”

“Of course, I’m not going to let you do this on your own…” Tina replied, not quite sure that the turn in her stomach at the thought of entering Lily’s house without her there was matching her words of reassurance.

They rounded the corner and Tina gave an intake of breath, she didn’t mean for it to be heard, but she couldn’t help it…

Lily’s urn was on the rocking chair, she remembered the previous day when Bette had brought it back to the house and she had known that is where it would be, but it wasn’t in the forefront of her mind when they had arrived.

It wasn’t that it startled her, but for some reason it hit her within the depths of that turning stomach.

Bette turned as she heard Tina’s reaction, she looked into her eyes as Tina’s eyes began to well.

“I’m sorry…, I just…, I just…” she took a deep breath and looked out to the garden before looking back at Bette, seeing the urn out of the corner of her eye, “I should be the one being strong for you…”

“Tina…, I can do this, what about if you go home and I’ll come around later…?” Bette said she stepped towards Tina, holding her hand gently as her thumb brushed along Tina’s fingers.

Tina smiled at the thoughtfulness of the words, “no…, really I’m okay, I…, it was just seeing her chair…, and…”

    “Are you sure…, I really don’t mind doing this…”

“No, I’m not letting you do this alone…” Tina said in a stronger voice, “come on let’s go inside…”

Bette took Tina’s hands in her own, she pulled her closer, “before we go inside…”

Tina smiled, the feeling of Bette’s body against her own was one she was rapidly getting used to, it was a feeling that immediately made her relax, made her feel safe…, “you were saying…?”

    1. Beautiful Jo, just so loving and warm. This chapter shows the love between the two of them and how much Lily loved Bette, just as her own daughter. Well, I guess so, she was her other mother. Jo, I want to know what the other deed is for. Wonderful story. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Post when you can.

    4. Jo, this is a beautiful chapter. Lily was so generous in the gifts she left behind for Bette but the gift of her unconditional love is what really makes this story so amazing. Brilliant as usual. PS.
