Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter Two

“Have you found a doctor or clinic?  This is really not something we should have to try to figure out…”

    “Carmen!”

“Shane.” She only said her name, but Carmen was requesting her lover’s silence while she spoke to Jenny.  “Jenny, you need help.  I’m not being mean or cruel.  Really, I’m not.  We can’t help you.  Shane’s not getting sleep.  I’m not getting sleep.  You’re not getting any better.”

Jenny sat all the way up and fell against the back of the sofa.  “What do you want me to do?”

“What do you think you should do?”

“Maybe you should go back to Chicago for a while.  Maybe your mom and dad will help you,” Shane considered aloud.

“That’s not an option,” Jenny said softly.

Carmen stared at her, then turned to Shane.  She pressed her lips together, biting down on them and then she sighed. “All righty.  I’m going back to bed.”  She stood up and left the room.

“Shane, I’m so sorry.  I don’t want to encroach on your relationship with Carmen.  I know you’re just getting started.  I’m sorry I cut myself and I’m sorry I’m having these dreams and disturbing everyone.”

“Hey, Mark’s sleeping okay out in the shed.”

“Yeah, no matter what happens, Mark gets his 8 hours.”

“Carmen’s probably right,” Jenny said softly.  “I need something.  I don’t know what to do.”

“Do you think you can talk to your Mom?”  Shane didn’t know what Jenny’s history was, but she had a feeling her stepfather might have some involvement.  Shane had spent a long time on the streets and saw the result of childhood sexual abuse.  Jenny had all of the classic signs.

    “Yeah, I could call her.”

“I’m thinking you might need more than a therapist.”

    “What do you mean?”

“A clinic like Carmen said.” Shane tried to sound nonchalant, but she heard the meaning in her own voice.

“You think I need an insane asylum?”

“No.”  Shane laughed.  “No, no.  I was totally not saying that.”

“I think you’re right.”  Jenny nodded her head, lost in her own scenario of life in a sanitarium.  “I could rest, take long walks in the garden, play checkers, and do art projects, while listening to orderlies speak to me condescendingly.  That should make me better.”

    1. Seems like with Bette and Tina its they always need to talk. A person in a coma can still hear, ,radio,TV,and human voices. Bette needs to tak,and talk and talk. Tina always loved Bettes voice. thanks

    2. Ooooh–Bette is a wench for saying that about Tina, but I understand the frustration and doubt she must be feeling about Tina’s recovery. I love your footnotes!

    3. The L Word 3: The Missing 6 Months! Thank you for taking on this task. To quote Nelly (and DeBarge): “I like it,(I know you like it)I like it,I really, really like it.I want it,adore it.” …Glad you’re back! Keep up the good work! Reading your writing is my pleasure!

    4. As much as I love Bette…and I do, she is my favorite character…I think that was an incredibly selfish thing for her to say…that she thinks Tina is in a coma because she is somehow punishing her. Geez Bette! Thanks!

    5. I have to agree with Seahurst…Bette is so egocentric and selfish. And, she is my favorite character. Her vows included in sickness and in health.

    6. When a loved one is in a coma for a long period of time, your own brain begins to wonder why this is happening. You begin to fight within your ownself as to why the person you love is still in this state. In this case Bette can not understand why Tina is not there (awake) and by now she is struggling with life in general. Why is it that some people can wake up within a matter of hours while others never wake up? Tina is there, she somehow has to pull herself out of the gray fog. Hopefully with the new faculities she will get the needed therapy.

    7. she has to keep talking to her… tina can hear … coma patients can hear whats going on around them.. so bette needs to keep telling tina all about angielica and the girls and how much she loves her… bette had to stop the negitively… just positive things to get tina back…keep it going… please continue

    8. No one can say how you will respond to a loved one on a coma. It must be totaly devestating. I personaly don’t think that Bette’s remark is selfish at all. It may be irrational, but think one’s mind goes into overdrive when you fear lossing the one they love. I cried while reading this story. (Sorry, I am a Tina fan) Please let Tina be alright. let her wake up! Lovely Story!!

    9. when my dad passed away he was sick before hand for a long time…the last day he slowly fell into a coma, anyway, my point being is that they tell you even though the person in a coma can’t respond, the hearing is the last thing to go. They can hear you as you talk to them…and so I talked and talked…Bette get off your confused horse and TALK. Again, we have not had a bountiful story like this to sink our teeth into for awhile…THANKYOU
