LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-16
Tina stared at Angelica a few steps back, she had seen those maneuvers done several times, ten, maybe twenty times a day but now she felt something different, unpredictable, something she had never seen.
There was Angelica on the bed, not a stranger, not an adult, a child and mostly her daughter.
”What happened?” Bette came in quickly enough without Tina turning to look at her she knew from the tone of her voice that she was there now, after all that time.
”little girl, 3 years old, unconscious for about half an hour, slow heartbeat, high temperature..” De Luca said quickly and nervously while helping Dana attach the tubes for the IV and the blood draw.
Bette stared at Angelica astonished, her forehead was dripping, she was in danger of fainting at any moment, her eyes closed, her mouth slightly open, Angelica’s complexion was lighter than usual. Bette ran a hand over her forehead and began reading the heart rate monitor.
Slow.
”Who’s on duty?” Bette said
”We called Dr. Peabody, she’s coming…”
Bette nodded nervously ”ok…administer antipyretic and saline, she’ll be dehydrated.”
”She’s not on duty in pediatrics…” De Luca ventured
”yes but I’m a pediatric surgeon damn it, and this is an emergency!” Bette blurted out quickly and De Luca was as she was told.
Bette waited a few seconds checking Angelica’s pulse after which the emergency door swung open again.
”What do we have?”
”Little girl…” De Luca began
”It’s Angelica damn it!” Bette screamed too loud turning to Helena almost with tears in her eyes and her friend understood rushing to Bette’s side who wiped her sweaty forehead with the back of her hand, she was too stressed at that moment.
Helena didn’t notice Tina in the corner either but she immediately took care of the little girl.
”she is unconscious…she has lost consciousness, I suspect it is Kawasaki Hel disease…”
”Bette is a very rare disease how do you think?”
”strawberry tongue.”
”many infectious diseases carry it.”
Bette sighed heavily ”if we start immunoglobulins and aspirin and she gets better in 24 hours we will know.”
Helena turned to face her ”if she doesn’t need immunoglobulins we will destroy her immune system, I need time for the heart tests. I need to have the tests.”
