    Lest I Forget (28)

There were about two years of complete and utter happiness for us after Kallie came home. I’m sure there were probably bad things scattered in there too, but honestly, the only ones I remember are funny in retrospect. We met with the parents’ group just about every week, and Kallie seemed to love it.

She learned really quickly, too. We could tell her the name of a certain thing, and the day after, she’d roll over to it in her chair thing and touch whatever it was while saying its name. Every time we told her she did a good job, she would laugh as though it was hysterical for us to do so.

She stayed in her mode of dragging herself from piece of furniture to piece of furniture for quite a while before she took her first step. It wasn’t even that big of a deal, to me anyway. She just sort of let go of the arm of the couch and stumbled forward a few steps in Alice’s direction before landing smack on her diapered ass and laughing.

Alice was jubilant about it, and seemed a little miffed that I wasn’t more excited. She jumped out of her chair and picked the baby up, holding her and cooing about what a good girl she was. It made me smile, because while Alice was generally pretty affectionate with her, her heart seemed to be in it this time.

Kallie loved everyone, too. After her first stumbling steps, every time someone would come to the house she would laugh and then toddle over to them. They always opened their arms to hug her, and she’d go into them as fast as she could, giggling the entire time. Everyone thought it was adorable, and it really was. She was pretty much always happy, especially when she saw any of her aunts.

“She’s gonna break hearts,” Alice told me one afternoon when Kallie had walked over from the couch to the chair Helena was sitting in. “I mean, look at her. She knows how to charm the ladies.”

“She could be straight, Al,” I protested. “She does the same thing to Howie. And Harrison. And my dad.”

“You can’t use that as evidence!” Alice scoffed. “The only man in that group who isn’t gay is her grandpa. Of course she can charm him.”

    1. Sorry I haven’t commented in awhile! I love how Kallie loves Shane and Jenny!I also like the direction you are taking this story and not too much of Alice in the hospital because it makes me sad…Great Work MT!!!

    2. What an amazing chapter, MT!! I can see why it would be exhausting for you. Incredibly written, as usual. I love the humor in the first part of the chapter — it really helped balance out the drama in the end. The whole “is Kallie gay” thing at the beginning was so funny and so Danish. I could see a conversation like that. Sounds like, in this case, it was a smart idea to push the potty training. It’s wonderful how bonded Kallie is to all her aunties — Alice and Dana are so lucky to have them. Kallie shouting out “Love” is just too cute. Poor Kallie!! You paint a very vivid picture of what happened with her. Thank goodness Shane was there. I know Alice could have handled it, but, another set of hands can really help. I’m a bit pissed at the doctor, too. I think parents sometimes don’t push when they need to — thinking they will be seen as overbearing. Alice and Dana have a rough road ahead. I hope they can get quickly past the guilt and blame and focus on getting Kallie the treatment she needs. Thanks so much, MT!! Truly remarkable.

    3. Bravo, MT! You deserve a round of applause. I wish you a good sleep. I can see how draining it must have been for you to write it as I read through the ordeal. I cannot help but feel bad for all the children who have TYPE I diabetes and the parents who have to care for them. A & D were facing a trying time ahead. It is comforting to know that Shane, Jenny and Helena were always supportive. You never seize to amaze me how in depth and detailed you write your stories. LMAO with the Pepto-Bismol comment. The McDonald’s lunch was a scream. I hope the doctors would figure out quickly what had to be done for Kallie. She was too adorable and lovable to have to suffer because of this disease at her young and tender age. I also love the fact that Shane built another bed for Kallie. The growing bond between Kallie, Shane and Jenny were pretty obvious. This is truly a work of art. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! & Hats off to you.
