Life: Altered 03.31 ~ Revealing

“What do you mean she WAS there! Where is she now????” Alice yelled
into the phone and the nurse told her that she’d been released. Her
voice calm and Alice’s voice shrill and stressed, envisioning Dana
getting on a plane and flying back, missing her first shot at true
stardom in her sport. She was going to kill her; Dana was never going
to forgive her; and she was never going to forgive herself.

“She’s blind!” Alice blared as if it were a fatal disease.

“Not dead Miss.” The nurse said and Alice hung up the phone, kicking
and yelling as her phone rang. She grabbed the phone, intent on yelling
at whoever was on the other end of the phone line.

“Al?” Shane’s voice came to her, a click and a pause. Alice’s heart
stopped, she was ok, her voice sounded fine, distant but fine.

“SHANE! Oh my god! Where are you, I’ll go get you, you were at County
General, what did you do, go for coffee?” Alice groaned, getting up off
the couch and heading for the door of her apartment, hand on the *****
as she bent to tie her sneaker.

“No, look Al, I’ve got some business….” Shane began and Alice cut her off with a quick question.

“Shane, where are you?” Alice asked, slipping her feet into her shoes
and listening to the faint clicks and static. Where the ***** was she?
Alice moved to her ID caller and saw ‘OUT OF AREA.’ on the gadget, what
the?

“I just wanted to tell you I’m cool, and Al? Say hi to your woman for
me…” Shane hung up, rubbing her sweaty hands on her jeans. She picked
up the phone and waited for the front desk to pick up. She’d found
Dana’s bags in the bedroom, but no Dana. Had she gone out? Did she have
a match already today? No, it started in two days, she had a photo
shoot first, and a huge dinner affair to attend tomorrow night.

“Um, hello. This is …” Shane began, and a thickly accented voice came
drifting to her ear from the phone, ***** and filled with promise.

“Miss McCutcheon. G’Day, is there something we can do for you today?”
Shane felt a surreal feeling coming over her and she was about to ask
where Dana was when the door crept open, and two voices came floating
to her.
