    "Hey, little sister," Ned greeted, punctuated by Karen’s nod of greeting, as Tina entered the hospital room. "Where’s your better half?"

    "Downstairs. Angie saw a dog, and Bette’s trying to convince her she’s not old enough to get a pet." Tina explained. She sat down on a nearby chair, and nodded at the empty hospital bed. "Where’s Dad?"

    "Doc told Paul to try to get Dad to walk around the hospital." Karen supplied, from her seat near the bed. "Heard you missed dinner with Paul and the kids."

    "Yeah, I kind of fell asleep," Tina admitted. "It just caught up with me, I guess."

    "True," Ned, who sat on the side of the bed nearer to the door and opposite from Karen, agreed. "And if you’re gonna ask, apparently Mom has a meeting this morning, and will come by this afternoon, and Cathy’s spending time with her kids."

    "That’s… nice, I guess." Tina said uncertainly. If Cathy was with her children, it would surely be harder to find time to have a conversation with her older sister. "Hey, you have Cathy’s number?"

    "Sure." Karen nodded. "You want it?"

    "And why would you want it?" Ned queried his sister.

    "Just in case." Tina said, entering the number on her own phone as Karen dictated it to her. She caught Ned’s skeptical look. "Look, I’d like to get this over with. If she and I can’t get past this, then at least I know."

    "Well, tell me how that goes." Ned told her. "Because I’m not forgetting that she made me choose between you two."

    "You know, I don’t get that." Tina admitted. "It wasn’t originally between me and her."

    "Well, she’s your sister. Of course she’s partly irrational."

    "Ass. She’s your sister too." Tina reminded. "In fact, she was your sister before she became mine."

    "Are you two done bitching about Cathy?" Karen asked. "You know, she’s usually not that bad."

    Both Kennard siblings looked doubtful, but remained silent.

    "Anyway, Nick and Nora adore your kid," Karen told Tina. "They were asking me when we can all go to LA to see Angie again."

    "Great. You can tell me more about what to look forward to between birth and high school." Tina smiled.

    "You were a terror in high school," Karen reminded. "And who knows what trouble you got into in college."

I know i have- and you capture so sweetly the delicate dance back to familiarity… comments made out of habit…cautious flirting… the joy in presenting a united front to others. This story is exquisite.

She totally knows she’s manipulating everyone, doesn’t she? And Tina… tsk, tsk. You knew she was going to make Bette buckle. Now you gotta get a puppy. Is Ned’s new girlfriend someone we know? Perhaps the woman that keeps offering Tina a job? PPS!!!

    13. Bette being on Tina’s lap made me go “awww”… Bette jumping up from Tina’s lap when her dad came in made me laugh. So… Tina’s still got to try to go and face Cathy, huh? Maybe Air Peabody will come and sweep la famille P-K away before that unpleasant confrontation has to happen. No? Bring it on then, tiff. Thanks for posting. :)

    19. Hey TD, Thank you for reappearing with another sublime chapter.It was good to read how relaxed Tina was in her siblings company. These guys and gals had some fum at each other’s expense. That is a major joy in any family’s life.Angie was a dreamboat as she forced her Moms into an intimate position in front of the rest of the family.Tina’s Dad was such a darling when he came back. Just accepting his kids for who they are as well as their partners and kids.As always, I am impatient for the the next poart.
