Life Happens: Return to LA
“I think that what Tina means to say…” Jenny jumped in, hoping that her two cents would solve all of their problems. “Is that she doesn’t give a flying fuck about anyone’s feelings but her own—and even then, who knows much about those. And I think that what Bette means to say is ‘Tina knows best no matter how deep her lobotomy went last month’, and what Helena is trying to say is that Alice…” Jenny leaned forward toward the despondent woman, “You have every right to feel whatever you feel, and that we’re all here for you, and that life is really fucking hard and we all know it.”
“Thanks Jenny…” Alice reluctantly accepted this strange ally, smirking as Shane smothered rising laughter beside her. “But um…I think we’re being a little hard on Tina.” She craned her neck as Tina walked out of the café. “Helena? What’s up? Are you and Tina not getting along because of your relationship with Bette?”
“What relationship?” Helena said plainly. She pushed back her chair, ignoring Bette on her way out the door.
“Tina, wait.” Helena rushed to catch up with the blonde woman. “we need to talk.”
Tina stopped and turned on her heels, looking Helena over. She sighed and nodded before looking beyond the taller woman. “Maybe I should go talk to Alice first…it’s just, I get so impatient…”
“Of course.” Helena smiled. “Your dramas are very different than hers are now. Yours center around getting Angie a good dentist and finding her a good pre-school and curing her latest cold…Alice’s dramas seem small I suppose?” Tina nodded and shrugged.
“Look, Helena,” Tina’s change of subject was about to bring them both into dangerous waters. “I already know about you and Bette of course…”
“of course.” Helena and Bette had made things obvious since arriving back from New York and London. They just hadn’t talked it over with Tina. Bette’s approach was to ignore the awkwardness of the situation, shutting Helena out and coddling Tina in the meantime.
“I just need some time…” Tina said. “I don’t know how I feel about this…I mean it seems pretty serious. More serious than Bette and Jodi were…and I’m not having an easy time with it—especially because…”

Wow, you really write great dialogue, Helebette ! I must say I absolutely loved that verbal joust, even Jenny’s interpretation of Tina’s words in fact. That was hysterical, and amazingly, as crazy as Jenny might be, what she said made sense. I would even go so far as to say she was being quite lucid there. I think I like the new kind of drug she’s on. LOL !!! As a matter of fact, it seems all of your characters must have had a serum of truth or something for they are speaking their minds and not exactly hiding their feelings for once, huh ? But you know what I like the most about your protagonists ( I’m talking about B & H of course here ) ? I like the fact that Helena seems to be blasé and “disillusioned ” ( is this a word ? ), but never cynical and condescending and I also like the fact that Bette is permanently tormented by her fears, doubts and ghosts from the past, and so torn because … Well, because that’s how Bette is and probably always will be ! She’s complex ! That’s why she’s so fascinating. And I think that’s why Bette and Helena can be a good match, I believe they both feel nothing’s ever fufilling enough, nothing’s ever beautiful enough, ever good enough for them… And this is why they are potentially able to understand each other very well in my opinion. My theory is they are both passionate people, and of course a passion can be incredibly frustrating, overwhelming, and sometimes even downright painful and depressing. Anyway, enough with this futile rambling. I’m loving this Helebette ! When did you say you were going to post an update to “Ligea’s poet” by the way ? LOL !! Thanks a lot for sharing this with us.
Dinner party? You know its just not good to put too many women in the same room together, especially when some of them are ex’s of other whom they’re still in love with, who are not with they’re other ex. I know the story and that still just confused me.Jenny might very well be a bitch and a pain in the ass, but she was kinda right.
Welcome back! I’m glad to see a new chapter from this tasty story. Jenny is a bitch, but that’s what I love about her. For Bette and Helena are so cute together, and I hope that things will get better for the both of them..PPS!
Its about damn time. I loved the dialogue and I think Jenny came across perfectly because she can see the situation from the outside. PPS
Well, it’s about time! Experimenting is good; angst is good; lack of Helena & Tina catfighting… well, I’m undecided on that; the Virginia Woolf reference escaped me entirely (probably cos I wouldn’t know one if it walked up and chinned me). The chapter: good. Now then, hopefully this gets you back posting *everything* regularly. (I don’t expect much, do I? Post as you can tho.) Cheers, hb
F Jenny she is such a bitch. ait has to be hard for Tina seeing the love of her life with one of her good friends not to mention an ex. And Bette is torn because she still has feelings for Tina and she is falling in love with Helena.
I’m very glad to see this one again, helebette (still waiting on Ligea’s Poet). Shocked, but in a good way, that Jenny was the most cogent of the bunch. her assessment cracked me up. I am surprised that everyone seems so lost. Isn’t there a difference between being lost and not knowing what to do? I guess I equate being lost with a disrupted sense of self. I really hope Bette can find a way to honor Helena’s current (and presumably future) place in her life without dishonoring Tina’s place in her past. That should be some freaking cosmic dinner party. Will Jenny be the life of it?
At first I thought the Virginia Woolf reference had something to do with Alice’s opening statement about losing herself. But then I read the last paragraph. I wonder how Mrs. Dalloway’s dinner party would have gone if Alice had been one of the attendees.
