    Transplant time – Part 2: Complications

                The doctors left and then so did the gang. Bette was the last one to leave, she embraced Tina for a long time and kept telling her for a few minutes how much she loved her and that everything would be fine. The whole gang and Caroline were in the waiting room of the Surgical Wing for almost three hours when Dr. Davenport came to see them.

     

                “The surgeries are over already?” asked anxiously Kit before give a chance to the doctor says a word.

     

                “Not yet, I’m here because we had a complication.”

    CHAPTER 15:  Transplant time – Part 2: Complications

     

     

    “Jesus!”

     

    “Complication?”

     

    “What the fuck!”

     

    “Is it bad?”

     

    “With Tina, Bette or the liver?”

     

    “What kind of complication?”

     

    “Who?”

     

    “Oh my God!”

     

                “Tell me it’s not a bad one.”

     

                “Complications are always serious.”

     

                “Shit!!!”

     

                “I knew it wasn’t a good idea.”

     

                “They knew the risks.”

     

                “How are they?”

     

                “You did the transplant?”

     

                “What happened?”

     

                “Please… don’t tell us someone is …”

               

                Some of the questions were distinguishable among the rest of them that the doctor heard coming from the chorus of voices. Dr. Davenport expected a little for all of them calm down so she could explain to them what happened and go back to work. She was almost giving up since the chorus seemed more and more confusing and louder, far away of a stop. But at last someone who Dr. Davenport identified as the most androgynous of them decided to put some order to that mess     

     

                “Come on guys…let’s give the doctor a chance to talk” said Shane very peacefully, gesturing at them to stop. And surprisingly they did. With all the attention finally turned to her, Dr. Davenport started to explain

     

                “Well unfortunately Bette had a complication not unusual in that type of major surgery…”

     

                “Oh my God!!!” exclaimed Kit and a couple of others and for a moment the attention was turned completely to Kit. All the gang reunited themselves in a warm embrace, squeezing the arms of each other as if for support and even if Caroline wasn’t involved in that gesture of affection, Dr. Davenport could see that she was touched by the news too but in a lower degree. From Caroline parted the initiative to restart the conversation after this brief interruption and when she talked, everybody could sense a glimpse of worry and regret in her voice:
