    Lifeless Chptr. 10

Bette was in her office about to close another file when her concentration was broken by a soft almost hesitant knock to her door.

“Yes?” she answered without looking up. The soft and timid throat clearing caught her attention. She finally looked up over her glasses and saw Kelly standing in her doorway holding an envelope.

“May I come in Dr. Porter?”

“Of course Kelly.” Bette said and was instantly wary as to why she would ask that question, she’d been barging into her office for almost five years now and not once has she ever refused her company. Bette saw that the envelope had her name written on it, in what could only be Kelly’s handwriting. She eyed her receptionist skeptically and sat her pen down as she sat back in her chair waiting for Kelly to begin to explain why she was still in her office at such a late hour.

“Dr. Porter I– I was going to leave you this envelope with my resignation on your desk but I decided that saying this to your face would be much more beneficial.”

    “Resignation? Kelly, I –”

“Please let me finish before, you say anything else.” She quickly and almost to loudly interrupted Bette with a big huff of breath and looked to Bette as she spoke her mind. Bette sat back again and waved her hand up allowing Kelly to continue before she asked any questions.  “I have worked here for nearly five years and I see that above everything else your dedication to professionalism comes first. It’s what I admire the most about you; along with your meticulous attention to detail it’s what has made me stay for so long.” Kelly said with her eyes fixed on the doctor’s. But the second part is where she always stumbled and needed to look away from Bette. “It is also one of the characteristics that has made me the most miserable person in this office.” the word ’miserable’ struck Bette unmercifully. She’d never known Kelly to be unhappy or to be upset; maybe just like her she was presenting what she’d thought everyone wanted to see.  “I can honestly say that I love you Dr. Porter. I’ve tried; relentlessly tried to get you to notice me and it seems to have no affect on you. Almost as though you’re impervious; or rather oblivious to the advances of any woman in this office.  And I took that as a sign of your professionalism out weighing your desire to get know me, but as of late you’ve developed quite an intimate relationship with your patients.” Bette just recently saw how Kelly could misinterpret her and Tina’s relationship as anything other than friendship. “So I figured that by staying here I would only hinder my progression towards my departure away from these feelings I have for you. I have set up a list of great receptionists I know you’ll approve of on the second Sunday of next month as that Friday will be my last day.” she finished and finally took her eyes away from the wall near Bette’s head. She wanted to speak directly to her but her mind was much sharper away from the delicate features of her boss.
