Lifeline – Bette and Tina, Chapter 5

Bette’s eyes widened as she bit her bottom lip, swallowing a sob that threatened.  Kit reached over and placed her hand along her sister’s forearm, rubbing it soothingly.  She sensed a slump in Bette’s erect posture, and her heart clenched, knowing how hard the younger woman was trying to be strong.

“Tina’s shoulder was dislocated by the impact of the falling light structure, and her collarbone was broken as well.”  He paused to let Bette digest that information.  “We have reset the shoulder and the collarbone will simply need to heal.  Unfortunately, complicating issues further, she sustained three broken ribs on her right side as well as a collapsed lung.  I’m going to be honest with you, she’s in very grave condition at the moment, but I’m encouraged with the way she’s responding to treatment, so far, considering the extent of her injuries.  Ms. Porter, I want to assure you that we’re doing everything in our power to ensure the best possible outcome, okay?”  He attempted a wan smile, patting her hand kindly.  She met his eyes with an expression of gratitude and nodded, unable to speak.  Tears began to trickle down the beautiful brunette’s cheeks again as she hung her head at the last of the doctor’s news.  It all sounded so bleak.  She just wanted to be with Tina, whatever the prognosis.

“I’m sure you want to see her,” the doctor added, reading her thoughts with a look of compassion, “and I’m going to let you do that, briefly,” he nodded, “but I have to warn you that you may not recognize her at all.  Her head is wrapped in bandages and her face is bruised and extremely swollen. ” He waited for understanding from Bette.  Shane and Kit turned to her as well.  She nodded slightly, not looking up.

“I want to see her,” she whispered.  Kit squeezed her arm and looked at the doctor.  He stood.

    “I’ll take you back.”

Kit helped Bette stand steadying her as she regained her balance.  Shane got to her feet as well, looking on helplessly.  The young doctor reached for Bette’s arm, gently guiding her out of the room and down the hall, while Kit and Shane watched them go, their arms entwined, heads bent together.

    3. I have just caught up with your story and it is heartbreaking. I know it is a word others have used, but there isn’t a better one to describe the feelings evoked by your story so far. Although there were those cute and tender pre-accident scenes, and it was lovely that Bette told Tina how she was feeling when they spoke on the phone. This is beautifully written – thank you!

    4. Thanks for posting this story. I love the way you have written the Tina and Bette characters. The love and trust they have for each other really comes through. I really like the way you wrote Tina in the first chapter. She is so nurturing with Bette and she does it in the cutest way. I really hope she makes a full recovery…Bette needs her.
