    Lifeline – Chapter 15

“B e t t e!  Where are you taking me?”  Tina whined in a childlike voice, eliciting a
    laugh from the brunette.

    “You’ll see,” she
smiled, covering Tina’s lips with her forefinger.  “Shhh…”

    “But B….”

    “I have an idea…come
    on….”

    She dialed her cell
and a short conversation ensued, after which she hung up with a sly grin.

    “Who was that?”  Tina slurred.

    “Shane.”

    “What?  Shane?
What’s Shane got to do with anything?”

    “T…just hang on…and
    keep walking.  Trust me.”

    She pulled her
confused lover up the beach toward the row of opulent houses and headed over
the dunes to a sprawling mansion next to their host’s home.

    Under a very large
carport a luxurious coach bus was parked beside the house.

“What’s this?”  Tina raised an eyebrow.

    Shane stood smiling
at the bottom of the bus’s steps, arms crossed.
She gave Bette an almost imperceptible nod.

“This, baby, is a tour bus.”

    “I can see that,
Bette,” Tina giggled, “but whose is it?”

    “Would you believe
    Steven Tyler’s?”

    “What the fuck?!”

    Bette laughed.

    “Why’s Shane looking
like the cat that swallowed the…the…”
She fumbled for the right word, her fuzzy brain unable to locate it.

    “Canary?”  Bette asked, archly.

    “Yeah…” she
answered, throwing up her hands in a comical way.

“Because she happened to find it unlocked and uninhabited.”

    “She did?”

    Bette and Shane exchanged
a look that said, ‘better get her inside before she alerts the neighborhood.’

    “Why don’t we go in,
T?”  Bette offered, ushering her up the
    steps.

    “Have fun you two,”
Shane called as she disappeared into the night.

    “Thanks Shane,”
    Bette winked.

    “Baby, is this o-kay?”
Tina asked in an exaggerated stage whisper.

    “Aerosmith is on
    tour in Europe.”

    “How do you know that?”

    “Alice told me.”

    “We could get into a
lot of trouble for breaking into this bus, B.”

    “We didn’t break in,
    baby.  The door was unlocked.”

    Bette’s smile
distracted Tina long enough for the brunette to close the door and ease her
    wife inside.

“Wow!  Would you look at this thing?”

“Jesus, Bette!  It’s nicer than our house!”

    Bette managed to
    look affronted.

    “It’s not bad for a
    bus.”

    Tina opened the
    large fridge.

    “I’m hungry, babe…”
she muttered, her stomach overruling her worries about jail time.

    Bette sat her down
at the banquette in the “kitchen.”

    “Well, let’s see
what we’ve got here…”  She rummaged
around inside cabinets and the refrigerator for whatever she could turn into a
snack and came up with two large triangles of cheese, a new box of sesame crackers,
artichoke hearts, caviar, pickled asparagus spears, greek olives, and a bottle
    of chilled champagne.

    4. gr8d8, Please don’t keep us waiting any longer you must continue with this story, it’s much, much too good to leave for too long. I will stay faithful in my nudging but I will be VERY persistent as you well know.

    5. any chance to get an update? i went back to read the earlier chapters again. it was about a year ago that a couple of earlier chapters were written, during the valentine’s day period. a year! and this latest chapter was posted sometime in January 2012! Please keep them coming.

    6. Okay first off congratulations on finding love, I wish you both the best. Second off, I love this story! Granted I had to reread to properly enjoy this update but it was totally worth it. Finally third off, you left it there! Now I have to patiently wait for an update lol

    7. To say that I am thrilled you are back is the understatement of the year…. But hey.. You had a wonderful excuse! Can I tell you that I was thinking about your story as recently as two days ago and hey presto you pop back on the front page… I did not even have to go back and read because I remembered perfectly the premise and knew just where you had left us… It was like finding an old friend again and continuing a perfect conversation. Welcome baxk and thank you. Kx

    8. Its seems almost impossible that I have been a fairly consistent patrin of this site for the better part of 6 to 7 years and somehow missed this story throughout that time. However, as fate would have it I logged in tonight and found myself intrigued by the promises of a new story. So I went back to the start and have read the the story in its entirety throughout tonight and I can honestly say it is perhaps one of the most eloquently written stories I have ever read…anywhere. You have a way of drawing out a scene into a plethora of emotions and descriptions that relate to the reality of life and situations that many could never begin to put into words as beautifully as you do. I hope I’m not too forward in saying so but your writing calls to mind thoughts of “the well of loneliness” by radclyffe hall. You just really allow readers to see into the heart of these charcters that you right. I felt as though I was learning profound things about the characters of bette and tina as if these were actually the intentions of their creator. I think ilene would be jealous of your insight because you quite possibly write them with more truth than she ever eeven considered. anyway, the story really is lovely and I have enjoyed the rollercoaster of emotions as I have laughed aloud at lines such as “you fucking vixen!” Or almost cried at the surrealism of bette’s situation at first getting the news and trying to compare it to the morning as tina left. I’m glad you came back to add another chapter and I do desperately hope that time allows you to continue more consistently because I am simply addicted. Thank you.
