    make you forget

Alice noticed immediately the acrimony that filled the room.  It hit her like a ton of bricks when she realized what was going on.

“Wait, Bette, you’re interning with who?”

    “Peggy Peabody.”

“Which is…” Alice turned her attention to Helena.

    “My mother.”

“So, you…” Alice proceeded to point at Bette just to make a point.

“Let me guess, you’ve been ranting about me around town about how much you hate me.  For someone who can’t stand me, you’re mighty loquacious when it comes to me.”

    “Wow, this is awkward.”

“Al, I’ll call you later.  My stuff will be moved in tomorrow morning, okay?”  Helena stood up, “I’ll be around.”

Bette and Helena never broke eye contact, as Helena walked almost nose to nose with Bette.  There was something more there though, and it was obvious to everyone but the two women involved.

“It’s kind of like looking into a mirror, huh?” Alice asked, nudging Bette.

    “I’m nothing like her.”

“That’s exactly what Helena would say.”

Bette shook her head and grabbed Alice by the waist.  She pulled her into a tight hug, “Hey.”

    “Hey, I missed you.”

    “Missed you too.”

Kit took her sister into her arms, like she sometimes did when Bette was much younger.

“Mmmmm,” Kit said as she hugged her sister a little too tight for Bette’s ribcage, “You have been missed.”

Shane was last to hug her, but the hug was just as meaningful as everyone else’s.

Truth be told, this is what Bette’s missed most about California.  Her friends were as close as family.  Shane was like the younger sister she’d never had.

Alice, on the other hand, was a little more.  Though their relationship was over and had been over for years, their sexual relationship had never ceased to exist.  They knew they could never be a couple—they just didn’t match and Bette was sure they couldn’t live together.

But that would never stop them from having sex.

“You know she’s only like that because her mother likes you.” Shane said, sipping her tea slowly before locking eyes with Bette.

“But what does that have to do with me?  Yes, it sucks if her mother doesn’t respect her, but I had absolutely nothing to do with that.”
