    Never Can Say Goodbye

Bette had awoken from the slight pain on the left side of her head, it took a few seconds to acknowledge the fact that the phone was still attached to her ear, ignoring the pain she pressed it tighter to her ear and listened intently to the steady melodic breathing.  She glanced at the bedside clock, 03:17, she surmised she couldn’t have been asleep for long, the last time she had checked was 40 minutes ago, she moved the phone to her other ear and rubbed at the impression the phone had left.

Her eyelids where becoming heavy and sleep was once again beckoning until her ear was blessed with a soft low moan through the receiver.  Her smile was a reflex as was  the tear that she hastily wiped from her cheek.

Over 13 hours they had talked, shouted, listened, cried, and even laughed on occasion and still they remained at exactly the same place they had been the night before.  Apart.

Tina had initially called just after lunch to tell her that she had managed to re-new the lease on her apartment and whatever Bette decided to do with the house was fine with her.  Still with the phone pressed tightly to her ear, the uniquely  comforting rhythmic breaths still audible.

Bette wondered if her decision to proceed with the purchase was made from her want for a bigger abode or purely from the hope that somehow they could fix this, that hope however slim at the start of their 13 hour marathon was now completely extinguished and she knew that at sometime today she would be walking alone through the door of what should have been their new home.

The sigh she exhaled was one born from irony,  why hadn’t…..why couldn’t they communicate with each other like they had yesterday, would the outcome have been any different if they had.  Who knew?

Was it her own arrogance that had stopped her from admitting she didn’t want children when Tina had excitedly claimed the smaller bedroom in what was to be their new home as a nursery, or simply her unwillingness to admit that their differing wants would sooner or later become at the very least a huge bone of contention.  That later had arrived sooner than she had anticipated she had wrongly assumed she would have the time to show Tina that she could and would be enough to make her life a happy and fulfilling one.
