Bette’s house, Spaulding Square, West Hollywood, 2007

Angie picks at her spaghetti with chubby little fingers, it’s so cute to watch. I think this is the first time I’ve given her real spaghetti and just left her too it, observing with interest as she assesses its stickiness. She’s confused by the way her food is clinging so stubbornly to her plate, obstinately refusing to go in her mouth. She grins at us both with a red sauce smile and Bette takes a moment to place her cutlery down before letting out the loudest belly laugh I’ve heard come from her in a really long time.

When she laughs like that it sends shivers down my spine, I’m adding it to the list of things I miss, I feel as though I need a substantial list to confront her with.

She makes a series of yummy sounds, helping Angie out of her mess, our little sticky angel. I want her to grow up always knowing that her Momma’s favourite dish is my chicken parmigiana, I want her to know why we both love oysters because we ate them on our second date, I want to be there to watch Bette teach her how to shell a prawn, stupid things.

“Mmn … Tee, this is delicious,”

I may add the look she’s now giving me to the list, the way she moves her eyes gently up and down from my body to my face, she’s giving me this look of unrestrained want. She and Jodi were energetic, fiery, and obviously passionate but I never saw Bette give her the look of absolute desire; the look that used to make me tremble, thinking that she might break me through loving me so much, and for a moment it’s hard to focus on a reply.

I smile, “It’s been a while since we had this”

Truthfully, it’s been a while since *we* had anything. Slowly but surely, the last few weeks before she left for New York we just stopped running from each other’s company. At first I thought it was because she was comfortable again being with Jodi and that the playing fields between us had levelled. Then I realised we grew closer as she and Jodi synchronously pulled apart, which sent out signals of an entirely different kind, waking up my mind to the reality that we were far from over. So here we are, eating dinner just like we used to. Fuck, who am I kidding, we never ate dinner like this, not for years.

    1. Loved it. Again. Looks like they might be getting into some heavy stuff soon. But I love the communicating with their eyes..and bodies too. Its really profound. I did notice she sounded like she had a hot ride.. but thanks for the Audi mention. I’ll be waiting for the next installment.

    2. Something that you wrote about Bette pushing Tina into a corner. Tina went to that corner and stayed for awhile. When she did venture out she did not go far. It was not until Angelica was born that she truely went back into the center of the ring. But this time she had fire in her eyes and was fighting back with everything that she had. She may have even played dirty with Henry but she was like a caged cat pushing her lover away to protect herself and her baby cub. Bette was not a threat to Angelica but Tina felt that Angelica would rather be with Bette than herself. I believe that is why she used Angelica against Bette. She was afraid of losing the only real thing that she still had and that was her daughter.

    3. I caught up! I caught up! Ok… whew. Anyway, they are SO CUTE, sofa… makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Two days and counting, partner in crime. But I’ll take more of this before then… or anytime, really. *sigh*

    4. awww, pookey-pies! those two are cute in this story. but not nearly as cute as angelica. she stole season 4, as far as I’m concerned. what with her little hair and grumpy moods and staring off into space and going “HI” once. the best line in this was when you wrote “for a fleeting moment I had my life back, the one I surrendered to all those years ago”–that was a melty melty little heart-wrencher. tres bien sofa! next time, zombies shoud….aww, never mind…your stories don’t need zombies to be exciting. lol

    5. We use more newspaper on the floor when our children were learning to feed themself. They really maded a lot of messes. Bette isstill trying to tell Tina that she wants a family together. Angie is so cute How can they share her I would want her around 24/7 Put Angie to bed. clean her up first and sit and talk. get her done Then go back to living. thanks
