Bette’s House, Spaulding Square, West Hollywood.

Boo is tottering around my ankles, wondering what the hell I’m doing in the kitchen for this length of time instead of throwing her around the pool or chasing her round the garden. She felt the same in the grocery store, displaying her displeasure at my prolonged anxiety over salad ingredients and colourful pasta. I’m not totally inept but she’s rarely known me to go anywhere except the deli and the isle where the kids stuff is, and to be fair, an awful lot of her food when she’s with me comes courtesy of Aunty Kit.

She’s eyeing me with interest, watching as I chop and peel, her grey teddy in one hand whilst the other holds a piece of green bell pepper which she ‘said’ she really wanted but then she sucked on for a while before trying to give me back. The steaks are ready to go on the grill, the salad’s about done and I’m about to make a start on the pasta salad that’s Tee’s favourite and almost signature dish. I had to ring Alice for one tiny thing but apart from that I’m pretty sure I can make it, I’ve watched her doing it for years and if I close my eyes then visually, it’s all there.

I toss the ready things in the fridge and grab my daughter from her stake out position on the floor behind me, tossing her upside down in my arms. She giggles excitedly, unsure and yet unwilling to question this new sparkle in her Momma’s step. We get our bathers on and take a dip, waiting patiently for her Mama to come back and complete our day.

I’m reminded, painfully and for the not the first time today of all those months when Tee was working and I was here at home, holding the baby. Our baby; the baby a stranger who’d never before met us was trying to keep from me. When I look at her now, all smiles and chubby fingers I still sometimes feel that same rush of fear and panic that bubbled beneath the surface the whole time we were breaking up. The knowledge that Tina held all the power where Angie was concerned truly frightened me. It wasn’t as if I loved her any the less, or even Tina for that matter, and if anything; the anger between us was only strengthened by our mutual overwhelming love for the curly haired one splashing about in my arms now.

    1. you’re completely cute, i have to get that out of the way first. second, fantastic chapter…i liked a lot. i don’t have a lot of time on my silly computer battery and this silly coffee shop doesn’t have plug in thingys that i can see, but damn good show babe!

    2. Wow, all the emotions flowing out of both women. If they can get past the hurt, anger and lost feeling then there is a chance of making it work and this time doing it right.

    3. Awesome. How can these two not be together. I just love what a great job your doing with they’re emotions. They know each other so well. This Bette, she has every intention of being all that Tina needs.

    4. another fabulous post, Sofa. The girls seem to be finding their rhythm with each other again, no matter how tenuous. It parallels little Boo so nicely. Baby steps, but forward steps none the less. Thanks for these updates, can’t wait for more.

    5. Awesome….13 chapters of totally awesome writing. The emotions your characters portray are palpable. I love this story and await with baited breath your next post!
