“What can I say? Shes hot,” Alice nodded, following the sway of Tinas hips as she walked away from the table and toward the restroom.

“Will you stop it!” Bette insisted, sitting up a little straighter in her chair.

“Its not like Im the only one checking her out,” Alice protested, raising her eyebrows.

“Im allowed. You, on the other hand”

“Dont even pretend to be worried. Not when she looks at you like that.”

    “Like what?”

“Like youre the only one at the table, in the room, and on the planet.”

“Youre not jealous, are you?” Bette teased.

“Of who? Ive been where shes going,” Alice retorted.

    “Shes incredible, though, isnt she?”

“Im assuming thats rhetorical. Because I know youre not asking for a second opinion. Has she told anybody yet?”

“Were going to her boss 4th of July party next weekend. That should pretty much get the news out.”

“Whoa. Less expensive than a billboard and theyll be serving alcohol. Good strategy,” Alice said. “And the boyfriend?”

“She broke up with him. Told him she met someone,” Bette said.

“So hes single then,” Alice mused, stirring her coffee.

    “Dont even think about it.”

“He deserves some comfort in his time of grief. And he clearly likes blondes.”

“Imagine the first time the four of us are at a party together. Eric, you know Tina, of course, and you remember my-ex, Bette, the woman who stole your girlfriend?”

    “Too much ***** drama?”

“Unless youre passing out score cards.”

Alice leaned back in her chair, grinning. “I guess she has enough to handle right now. Coming out. Dealing with you. Thats a pretty full plate. So. You guys haventyou know.”

    “Alice!”

“What? Its a perfectly reasonable question coming from one of your best friends.”

    “No. We havent.”

“Remember your first time with a woman? Or cant you remember that far back?”

    “I remember,” Bette said fondly.

“You always remember your first. No matter how messy or nasty or ugly it ends up.”

    “Thanks a lot!”

“Im just saying that you have some responsibility here. So make sure you show the girl a good time.”

“I never heard you complaining,” Bette said smugly, crossing her arms.

“I never had any complaints about that,” Alice said.

They both watched Tina weave through the restaurant on her way back to the table.

“I know its only been a month,” Bette said quietly. “But I thinkI think I might be”

“Yeah. I think you might be, too.”

“Ready?” Bette asked, standing up to greet Tina.

    “Whenever you are,” Tina said.

“Where are you two lovebirds headed off to?” Alice asked.

“Wellspring Market. Were cooking dinner together at my place tonight,” Bette said, pulling the shopping list out of her back pocket.

“Keep an eye on her in the cleaning supplies. She has a weird gadget fetish,” Alice advised.

“That explains the crate of squeegees,” Tina said knowingly, arching her eyebrows.

    “Exactly.”

Tina leaned down to give Alice a quick embrace. “It was great to see you again.”

“You too. Im sure well be seeing a lot more of each other.”

“I hope so,” Tina smiled, heading to the door in front of Bette.

“Hey,” Alice said, as Tina moved out of earshot.

    “What?” Bette asked.

“Hang onto this one, will you? She gets my jokes.”

    “Ill do my best.”

    1. Your dialogue is so life-like, yet it is beyond realistic, because you cust away the excess, leaving only what is essential, yet it never seems meager, always full of meaning and emotion.
      You certainly can write.

    2. Techie…I nominate you best commenter par excellence, you nail it everytime time. Cramit…I get such a kick out of reading your comments…you are hilarious.

    3. Wow, I am blown away. Just some friendly dialogue, but you manage to convey so much. Your Alice is perfect, as are all your characters. If you aren’t already a screenwriter you should be. I could so see this on screen. FANTASTIC!

    4. Wow! This dialogue was just the BEST:
“Keep an eye on her in the cleaning supplies. She has a weird gadget fetish,” Alice advised.

“That explains the crate of squeegees,” Tina said knowingly, arching her eyebrows.

I laughed so hard I just may need “Depends” before reading the next chapter! Love your writing.

    5. I love this story so much. It’s simply amazing. Thanks so much for the update! As always waiting for the next–not that I mean to be greedy or anything it’s just each one is always so GREAT!

    6. There are many B & T begininng stories out there FFC but I love your take on this. This chapter was light and breezy yet in conveyed the fact that Bette is falling hard. Thanks!

    7. Hey,” Alice said, as Tina moved out of earshot.

      “What?” Bette asked.

“Hang onto this one, will you? She gets my jokes.”

      “I’ll do my best.”

*sigh* I just love the way you write. I really do. I’d really give all my non-essential organs to have your storylines and dialogue on the show. :D
