“Fifty million lesbians in Los Angeles and you have to fall for a straight girl,” Alice said, watching as Bette walked through her gallery, checking to be sure that all of the evenings errant cocktail napkins and event programs had been properly disposed of.
“Thats a lot of hyperbole for one sentence,” Bette said. “And arent you supposed to be helping me?”
“I am helping you. Im supervising.”
“Thanks. Thats just the kind of help I need,” Bette muttered.
“Not only is she straight, shes also got a boyfriend. Or perhaps you didnt notice the handsome appendage clinging to her.”
“I dont know what youre talking about.”
“Im talking about Goldilocks in the little black dress. Also known as that woman you spent the entire evening staring at,” Alice said.
“Her name is Tina Kennard. And I was not staring at her all night,” Bette said defensively.
“Fine. Most of the night.”
“Whatever,” Bette said, turning back to her tasks.
“So I guess that means you arent the least bit interested in the conversation I had with the lovely Miss Kennard.”
“You had a conversation with Tina?”
“Do you think youre the only person in the room who noticed how hot she was? Besides, I was doing a little recon mission on your behalf,” Alice said.
“And?” Bette asked, trying not to let her curiosity show.
“Andshes really funny. And very smart. I wonder what she does.”
“She heads up development at Alphaville,” Bette said, a faint smile crossing her face.
“Witty. Intelligent. Successful. Shame shes such a dog, huh?” Alice asked. “Not like it matters to you though. Since shes straight.”
“I was straight once, too,” Bette said.
“No. You were never straight,” Alice chortled.
But Alices retort fell on deaf ears. Bette was bending over to retrieve a glinting object from the floor of her gallery. And the moment she picked it up, she recognized what it was. And to whom it belonged.

*slaps self* Why yes, yes you did. Now I have to quit my job and sit around all day waiting for updates. My short hair will grow out all unkempt. My finger will develop bursitis (whatever that is) from hitting the refresh button. My eyes will eventually melt off my face from staring at the screen and I will resort to having my poor confused roommate read me the chapters. I’ll start talking to an imaginary squirrel named Barbara who lives under my monitor while I wait. It’s gonna be ugly.
