    Only One

Not three weeks ago, Tina found herself by the window of her room, hazel eyes smarting from wounding thoughts.  Happening upon the scene after depositing a sweater into a closet, Bette stopped her progress back to the living area.  Instead, she entered and approached with concern.

“What’s wrong?” Bette asked softly not wanting to wake a resting Angelica.

Tempted to say nothing she turned her head to look out the window.  The generous leaves of one plant swayed having caught a gentle breeze and Tina’s attention.  Biting her lip, she relented then directed her gaze at Bette.

    “I know we’re not there yet, but…”

She paused, looking beyond the upright woman’s shoulder past the door that was left ajar.  In the direction of the hallway which led to the bedroom that held their memories.

    Where Bette stayed.

    Where she used to sleep.

Where she once clutched at the side of the shared bed to keep as far away as possible.  Using soft pillows to keep separate her hardened thoughts and keep them apart in more ways than one.

The image of Bette reaching for her and entreating the smallest of signs that she was wanted came to mind.  She shuddered.  At the coldness emitted, the pain she inflicted on her lover.

Right then Tina wanted nothing more than to tear through the fabric of time, so she could turn and hold her partner tightly.  To reach out now and urge the memory away.

Broken, bruised and numb,  “…I wish the walls that keep you away from me would just disappear,” she admitted tremulously.

    So she could touch her.

So Bette could touch her back.

She missed her.  She wanted Bette’s embrace.  For her partner to look at her with possession.  A look she wanted to mirror.  To banish the trace of uncertainty she saw in the eyes of her beloved.  That Tina may not want her contact.  The doubts she herself planted and catered to.

But it was also more.  Her want was more than the manifestation of physical touch.

She wanted them to…feel, through and through.  In the marrow of their bones and with each breath they took.  Thoughts of today.  Promises for tomorrow.  She wanted to start somewhere.  To share with Bette her need and be vulnerable to the feelings that stirred deep within.
