As Alice reached the end of the last page of the letter from Dana for the third time, she set it aside, not wanting to read the final paragraph again, not wanting to acknowledge Dana’s goodbye any further.  She sat staring at the remainder of the package in front of her trying to identify her own emotional state.  It dawned on her that perhaps what she was feeling was relief, that after all this time, the worst of her fears had been allayed by Dana’s words.

She reached forward and picked up the package on the table.  It still felt reasonably heavy.  Alice was truly perplexed as to what more it could contain.  Surely Dana had said it all, what more could there be to say.  She didn’t have the answer to that question but what she knew for sure was that she needed to process the contents of the letter she had just read before she could go on any further.  She tried to shrug off the feeling that often overcame her in these moments since Dana’s death when the only thing she could think of was ringing the athlete to discuss things with her.

As she continued to contemplate the contents of her letter, the buzzer went.  Not expecting any visitors, Alice was surprised and slightly reluctant to answer it.  She definitely didn’t want to have to make small talk with anyone this afternoon.  It buzzed again, this made Alice think that perhaps it was someone she knew, as a stranger probably wouldn’t bother ringing twice.  She leapt off the couch and hit the button.

    “Hello”

“Alice, It’s me Helena, I’m sorry I should have called first, I’ll go if it’s not a good time”

“No don’t be silly, come on up”

With that she buzzed her in and padded down the hall to open the door for her friend.

“Really Alice I didn’t mean to intrude” began the English woman as she exited the lift.  “If you’re working and I’m interrupting just tell me it’s no problem I’ll just call you later.”

“Helena, calm down would you, come inside, sit down.  It’s fine, I wasn’t working quite the opposite and actually you must be some kind of mind reader because I could really use a friend right about now.”

    1. Poor Alice! Again I applaud you for the honest emotions of your story that are so true to the characters. Love how you describe the thoughts of the girls on Dana having died alone — and the fact that if they didn’t say “good bye” she couldn’t leave them. I’m glad your internet connection is working because I really love this story! Thanks for the new chapter!

    2. I’m glad helena is there for alice!! i know i have to wait, lol. but i love how this story is unfolding and you are doing a wonderful job with it! :)

    3. Aww man I’m sitting here bawling at 8am. This is just incredible, and you’re immensely cute and sweet for valuing my opinion…I just write stream of consciousness baloney, you’re the one tackling the real issues of Dana’s death. It hurt me too much to write her dying, so I had her live. Stories like yours are what this Danish fandom really needs, though…closure of some sort after her death. We weren’t given even an inkling on the show. Thanks for doing the job far better and more eloquently than I ever could.

    4. I agree about everything that you’ve written in this chapter. What this Alice says and does hits close to home, so I understand. And I’m with Magoose, how this is written with honest emotions is just awesome. Thank you for this wonderful chapter. And yay to your internet connection. :D

    5. me again -rolls eyes- Seeing Alice grieve about Dana’s death is well… I don’t have the right word to describe it but thank you for um (I’m horrible :) ) including that with this story. I really don’t know what she felt after D passed away, I’m certain she was sad but it would’ve been great had the L word showed that to us. that’s all. :) I’m leaving, swear.:)
