Power Moves
Michelle’s shoulders slump slightly. She clutches the edge of the witness stand, pale fingers brushing the stack of papers before her. “Yes,” she murmurs.
Joyce nods once and gestures toward the microphone. “Please do us the honor of reading the first text message you sent to your then-wife.”
Michelle exhales, and leans forward. Her eyes flick over the typewritten lines. “Hey, baby—my brother’s in town, so I’m gonna have dinner at my parents’ house. Tell everyone I’m sorry I’m gonna miss family dinner this week….” Her voice breaks on the last words; she lowers her gaze.
Joyce nods. “And what time did you send that text?”
Michelle snaps her eyes up to the page. “7:03 p.m.”
Joyce inclines her head as though filing away a critical detail. “Thank you. Now please read the text you sent Ava on the same night.”
Michelle’s gulps. Her eyes glisten; she forces herself to press on. “Be there in five minutes….” She looks up, cheeks stained.
Joyce leans forward. “And what time did you send that text?”
Michelle glances down again. “7:05 p.m.”
Joyce holds two fingers aloft, each movement precise. “So, two minutes after lying to your wife, you texted your mistress to let her know your time of arrival.”
Michelle’s voice is barely audible. “Yes.”
“Well,” Joyce says, voice softening only slightly, “I guess we’ve solved the mystery on whether you’re a liar, haven’t we?”
Kelly stands. “Objection—”
Joyce cuts her off with a single raised hand. “Withdrawn, Your Honor.” She turns back to Michelle. “So just to make it clear for everyone here today, you and Ms. Porter divorced because you were unfaithful. Correct?”
Michelle lowers her head, then looks back up. “Yes.”
“And during that extramarital affair,” Joyce continues, “your son was frequently in the care of his other parent, Ms. Porter?”
Michelle nods, her throat bobbing. “Yes.”
“Your affair partner—did she have contact with your son?”
Michelle swallows, gaze flickering to the gallery. “Yes.”
“How often?”
Michelle’s shoulders hunch. “I don’t know. We were always friends, so…several times.”
Joyce walks back to her table and makes notes in her pad as she continues without missing a beat. “And was this affair partner presented to your son as a temporary presence?”

And that is what Bette already warned you about Michelle if you were foolish enough to go through with this and bring this to court.
You lost everything and it’s your own fault.
Love how Bette & Tina entered the courtroom, hands linked together, fully in support of each other. The support from their friends and especially Kit who supported Tina. Don’t feel guilty anymore Tina, Bette forgave you, it’s time to move forward and i like Bette’s idea to sell the house and look for a new home together.
I love this story, hope to read a new chapter soon.
Happy to see new chapter. Thanks for that.
So happy that you posted another chapter of this great story. Beautifully written as always! Please continue.
Oh my! I was on the edge reading the updates. I love Bette in this version. Hope she doesn’t go soft and stick to her word. I like the other version but that Bette frustrated me how she was always talk and no bite. The Bette in the rewrite oh my – she ROCKS!!! standing on business.
