Chapter 4

Bette:

"Okay, look at that man," Carmen said pointing to the young man sprawled on the floor clutching his stomach in pain from the deep bullet wound. "What can you tell me about him?"

I cleared my throat looking at the 21 year old man who was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

"His name is Daniel White," I said, "he’s 21 and he’s just an ordinary guy. He will become a regular school teacher and have three children with a woman named Linda Harris. He won’t do anything major or special."

"That’s true," Carmen said, "but that’s the thing about being a Milagroso, you have to see that everyone deserves a second chance even ordinary men like Daniel White."

"But people that are to become evil don’t deserve that chance," I said.

"I agree, that’s why I let Shane take Cynthia Mercer, because she would have three children then kill them and her husband," Carmen said, "and that’s also the reason I got exiled from my tribe."

"I would have never banished you if you were a Seguran," I said.

Carmen smiled, "that’s why I’m helping you Bette. Now, I want you to find all the good you have in you. Think of things that make you happy and form an orb."

I put my hands out and focused my energy. I thought about things that made me happy and Tina popped into my mind.

"That’s it," Carmen said.

I opened my eyes and noticed there was a white orb in my hands.

"Now focus soley on giving that boy life and throw the orb," Carmen said.

I looked at Daniel White and I pushed the orb at him. The white enveloped him and suddenly a car came into view on the solitary street. A woman ran out of the car and to his side.

"Ay Dios Mio! (Oh my God)" she cried pulling out her cellphone, "voy a llamar al ambulancia, aguanta! (I’m gonna call the ambulance, hang on)."

"G-gracias (thank you)" Daniel responded.

"Habla conmigo, tienes que quedarte despierto, (talk to me, you have to stay awake)" the woman said, "como te llamas? (What’s your name?)"

"Daniel, y tu? (Daniel, and you?)."

She smiled at him, "Linda."
