“You can joke, but I mean it. And that’s an enormous responsibility. And you are just the one to see that about her and not make her pay for her loyalty.”
She sat on the edge of the bed to study her granddaughter. “You are a perfect match for each other. There’s something deeply complex and yet really simple about that woman. And you understand every part of it. In return you cherish her, let her love you the same way you love her. Simple. Complex.”
“That’s the thing though. It’s her, Boo. All her. She makes me feel so safe, here, anywhere really. I never had that before her. I could never trust anyone’s love like I can with Bette. Even Tom, I know he loved me but he wasn’t always safe. You were though, I just didn’t see enough of you…” she smiled ruefully at Boo, the older woman waving the sentiment away like it was an annoying fly.
“We were magic when we were together. I am glad you feel safe here. And loved.”
“It’s Bette. Her love, Boo. God. It’s so fierce sometimes that I feel it even when we are miles apart. And it’s freeing, I never, not once have ever worried or wondered if she loves me.”
Boo smiled with watery eyes and Bette came in with a glass of ice water for the older woman, placing it on the nightstand.
“Tee always likes a cold glass of water next to her bed so I thought you might like one too. It’s part of my nightly duties so I just added you to the list…” and she smiled softly, happy to see Boo and Tina talking, her eyes meeting Tina’s across the room and holding them.
“Well that sounds like the nicest thing ever, thank you Bette.”
And something about the way she said those words settled on Bette’s heart to make it swell and she looked at Tina with such happiness that Tina chuckled, standing to offer her hand to the brunette, their fingers linking. She lifted it to her mouth to place a soft kiss on the back of Bette’s hand.
“Did Rosie go to sleep ok?”
“She is waiting for a kiss from you. She said two kisses two mamas…” They all laughed, Tina pulling Bette closer as they said good night to Boo, their hands going palm to palm, Bette’s perfume drifting over to fill her senses and Tina took a deep breath.
They made their way to their little girl’s room to find Rosie sitting up in bed, waiting. She grinned a sleepy grin and let Tina re-tuck her back in bed as Bette watched from the doorway, her eyes on the frame of her beautiful pregnant wife as she bent down to cover Rosie’s face in kisses.
Her family. Tee. Rosie. And now Boo. All in one house. And one more on the way… all was right in the world.
