Bette breezed by Erica, the secretary she shared with two other professors.

“Don’t pass through any calls till I tell you.  I’ve got something pretty important to sort out.  I’ll let you know when I’m through.”

“Sure thing Bette.  Hey wait just a quick reminder the start of term rosters are due by the end of business today.”  Erica ended up yelling to Bette’s back while she stormed through shutting her door without acknowledging Erica’s reminder.

Bette paced back and forth in front of her desk, waiting for Joyce, her travel agent, to come back to the phone.  On the TV in the corner of her office, the Weather Channel had just announced a voluntary evacuation of 10 counties in and around the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Angelica’s camp unfortunately was smack dab in the middle of the evacuation grid.   The announcement caused Bette’s pacing to come to a standstill for the few moments it took her mind to play all the negative scenarios out.  No matter which version played in her mind’s eye they all ended up badly unless Bette got Angelica out of harm’s way.  Having all those mental images running around in her head made Bette start pacing again, only this time her turns had a little more snap to them as if by in pacing she was trying to physically keep up with her flashing mental images.

Tina was in her own office also with the TV dialed into the Weather Channel.  When the evacuation announcement was made she immediately picked up her phone and placed a call to the camp.  Her first two attempts resulted in a busy signal.  She reasoned she wasn’t the only parent concerned about her child.  On the third try she got through, her called being answered on the first ring.

“Hello I’m Tina Kennard, Angelica Porter-Kennard’s mother.”

“Yes Mrs. Kennard, we are in the process of calling all the parents of our campers.  With the voluntary evacuation we are immediately moving all our campers to a facility we have secured sixty miles inland from here.   We have equipped the facility with enough supplies for two weeks.  But we feel confident that this storm will not require us to stay that long.  That should hold us over nicely we feel.”

    1. Bette…Bette…Bette…will she EVER learn…that is a decision they need to make together…I hope nothing happens to Angelica on the way home…but I have a feeling it will…I don’t think you will kill her but something is gonna happen to that plane and Bette and Tina will have some drama on their hands. Keep posting.

    2. Hurricanes are not to be played around with. I know that Bette is taking it all upon herself without talking to Tina, but she is doing what she thinks is right. If Hurricane Alice continues to be a major storm, 60 miles inland is not far enough away from to keep the damage to a minimal level.

    3. I have a funny feeling about this move Bette is making. To me the safer route would have let her go up to the moutain. What if the jet get caught up in the hurricane? What if the limo driver get there to late? PPS!

    4. Uh -oh – classic Bette and Tina. Now if I were Bette I wouldn’t want my teenage daughter going alone with some strange limo driver and some strange pilot on his plane, but Tina will tell her, won’t she? Well done, J.

    5. Uh, oh. Tina’s going to be hopping mad. But sometimes things just move along and take on a life of their own. PPS. It’s a shame to keep your most excellent writing in your head and not sharing.

    6. Sure they need to talk but Tina can’t be mad at Bette for taking charge…well unless the limo hits an unpleasant detour or unexpected turbulence on air..oh the dilemma. PPS

    7. Fabulous!! The tension is building!! I can just see Bette pacing back and forth with sharp precise turns! Love the way you describe scenes J…thanks for posting today!

    8. I’ve been looking for this story. I’m sure there will be consequences for this huge lack of communication. Thanks for a great chapter. Sending you a package soon.

    9. Hey JWet, Great to see you back posting and continuing this awesome story. I was wondering how the weather was progressing. The parallel yet different thought progresses were amazing. Trust Tina to be the earth mother and ready to deal with all at hand and let Angelica ride out the weather with all her friends while Bette fussed around determined to get Angelica out of the state not just the danger zone and back home. Perfect in the way that they both missed other another but were certain that the other would agree with their own plans. Can’t wait to see where the shit hits this fan coz I am sure that there will be turbulent time without the storm’s influence. Girl you just got it all going on in this fabulous fan fiction. More please as you are a real classy author and I can never get enough of your words. BRing it on soon, puh-lease. Your Loyal Fan.
