    Reunion

"But you’re kinda hot," Zack observed. "And I never think of women that way, so it must be true."

"Don’t say I’m hot," Tina blushed furiously at his comment.

"Okay, you’re smart, but smart isn’t going to get you any closer to having a date with this crush of yours, so you might as well accept that you’re also attractive," he said. "You know. If you’re into women."

"What I am is attracted to her," Tina said. "But I don’t know if she’s gay. Flirting when you’re 18 doesn’t necessarily translate to gay when you’re approaching 40."

"It’s the 21st century, who cares if she’s gay?" Zack shrugged. "You need a social life outside the four walls of this office. You’ve been here six months and the only people who know you are friends of mine."

"I like your friends," Tina defended.

"They like you too, but you’re never gonna get laid hanging around a bunch of gay guys," he said. "She’s smart, and she’s obviously more outgoing than you are, if she showed up at your office…"

"Yeah, she did," Tina had forgotten this salient feature of her afternoon interaction.

Bette had arrived at her office unannounced after researching how to find her. They had some things in common. Resourcefulness. Teenage reticence about taking curiosity too far. And the proximity was a definite plus.

"She offered to give you a tour; afterwards you can take her out for dinner as thanks…how tough is that?"

"You do make it sound easy," Tina said. "And I know it should be easier than I make it."

"What’s more important at this point is she thinks you’re straight," he said. "And that is a misunderstanding you’ll have to correct sooner rather than later. And you have to use the qualifier when describing your partner – business…research…or whatever. Partner by itself to a lesbian means, like, husband."

"You’re making it sound like I have no experience," Tina said. "I dated women during my undergrad."

"But only if they asked you out, and you always stopped at a certain point didn’t you?"

    "Mind your own business."

"Oh, touched a nerve there, did I?" Zack prodded further.

    1. I loved this! The banter between the characters flowed well and was totally believable. And you managed to make Tina’s social awkwardness sweet and humorous instead of just painful. I’m really enjoying how you’re developing this each post. Thanks for hanging in there with this one Swimmie!

    2. “You’re not the first filly that cowgirl has ever broke.” hahahahah!!!!!! I love it!!!! Literally laughed out loud…

You are truly gifted and I hope you come back to writing soon. Amazing stuff. THank you for the years of time and effort. Perfection, really.
