I smiled a little, or tried to at least. "She’s great, yeah. I just … needed to … we needed to leave." My eyes dropped as we heard the toilet flush, and then silence. I tilted my head in that direction. "Angie? Can you reach, baby?" She was a bit short for her age, and the sink was rather tall.

"No." She had such a sweet, quiet voice.

"I’ll be right back," I promised the woman quietly, before opening the door and picking her up to reach for the soap and wash her fragile hands. When she had dried them, we walked back out together, and she rushed over to her toys again that were placed by my bag over by the kitchen table. I leaned on one of the backs of a chair. Suddenly I was feeling a bit dizzy with it all. "I’m so sorry."

"I’m Bette," the woman smiled, extending her hand to me. To be honest, it made me want to cry – to see that someone could be so wonderfully sweet to a perfect stranger. I ended up pulling myself together, and replied to her.

    "Tina."

The handshake wasn’t intimidating, as I often felt about them. Her hand was warm and soft, and it made me smile before I looked over to Angelica again. I felt so awful for putting this woman through the trouble, but also incredibly grateful that we had stumbled upon her kindness.

I hadn’t noticed she was looking at me until I turned back to her.

    "How bad was it?"

I ran one of my hands over my face, and then through my hair. "… Bad."

And then I watched her eyes fall to my left arm, and three bruises that shamed me. It was obviously the mark of fingers through a firm grasp, and I covered it with my own hand. "I’m fine," I said automatically, trying to think up an excuse as I often would.

"Would you like something to eat?" Her quick change of subject gave me a sense of hope. Maybe this wouldn’t follow me everywhere, and dictate every moment of my life. Maybe my past wouldn’t have to become my present or my future. Maybe he would never find me.

    I was optimistic.

    1. Really great start, I love the way you write and you already have me hooked with this story. I can’t wait to see the connection grow between them as something positive comes out of something so terrible

    2. The first thing that ran through my mind after reading the first paragraph was J.Lo’s movie (only good one) “Enough”. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

    3. Hey GR, What a great opener to what is lining up to be a fantastic and important story. While I accept that this might be too difficult for many people to read however it survives and grows in silence. I applaud you for promoting the the idealogy of survival and optimism. Life can and does get better when you take charge of your destiny. The hardness part is the constant emotional and physical blackmail that the abuser use to maintain the status quo. I have the feeling that Tina’s life is about to improve immensely. I can’t wait to read more. GR, you take on the hard subjects then educate and entertain. You rock my world. Many thanks and keep up the great work. Your Loyal Fan and (Proud) Friend.
