    See What a Fool I’ve Been – Part 18

    ”The sky is falling
    Human race that we run
    Has left me crawling
    Staring straight at the sun
All in a moment I notice
    Every dog has his day
    I paid attention
    Cost me so much today…”

I stand up and motion towards the two men standing in the opposite corner of the room. They look like a replica of an improbable couple – John Goodman and Colin Farrell.
    “Hey”, I say tiredly.
“Miss Porter”, the Italian guy says.
“Look, you guys can sit down amongst us. You are not gonna bother anyone”.
He shrugs and blushes a little.
“Thank you ma’am. But we’re fine”.
The older man is staring at his own shoes. He looks like a fish out of water.
As I’m about to ask them what they’re doing here, exactly, doctor Breillard enters the room and Shane, literally, snaps.
We all gather around him as he pulls off his surgeon cap.
“The operation went well…” he starts, and there is this general, relieved exhalation of breath.
Shane doesn’t say anything, she’s just looking for further explanations.
“We successfully removed the foreign body from Carmen’s head. It had shifted from its initial position, and was still somehow moving into her brain, which was no good. During the operation Carmen had a discrete hemorrhage that we fixed. She is under transfusion now. The fragment was small but pretty sharpen and, despite its minor movements, it was extremely dangerous. Anyway, we removed it before it could cause a major damage”.
    Shane relaxes a little.
“How is she, now?”, Tina asks.
    Doctor Breillard scratches his forehead.
“She is still in critical conditions. As I said, there is no massive trauma but the operation was serious. And she bled a lot. A brain surgery is always serious, and the temporal lobe can be considered as one of the most delicate areas of the whole head. So…”, he pauses a little, “…What I can say now is that luckily Carmen’s fiber is strong, and her body is fit and young, and that means a lot in terms of recovery. Anyway, she’ll be in the danger list for the next 36/48 hours. The prognosis is good, though”.
    Shane sighs in relief.
    “Can I see her?”.
    Doctor Breillard shakes his head.
“No. She’s still in intensive care. You will see her tomorrow”.
    “Is she awake?”.
“No, she hasn’t regained consciousness yet. She’s still under anesthetic”.
“Is she going to be fine?”. A begging look into her eyes.
    Doctor Breillard doesn’t answer.
