Shane, Chapter 8
can you drop me at Bette and Tinas? Id like to talk to Bette.
Sure, just take it easy on her. She feels terribleand you shouldnt be throwing stones.
I willI just need to find out what happenedyou know straight from the horses mouth.
With that, Ivan takes me to Bette and Tinas house. When we arrive, no ones home, so I walk up to the front steps and take a seat. Ill wait here as long as I need to until Bette gets home.
Its still early; Bette wont be home for a while. Ill go out back and sit in a more comfortable spot. I walk around the back of the house and find a lounge chair. Sitting here staring at the pool I feel like I cant control anything around me. Bette and Tinas relationship always gave me hope. I remember that morning I was walking byI could tell just by looking at them that they. They were always so perfect together. I wonder how long this had been going onI couldnt see any of it. Maybe Cherie distracted me. I stopped paying attention to everything else. Why did I do that? Even in a relationship Bette and Tina always seem to notice the little things. They always seem to know when Im upsetor when Alice or Dana are upset. They could always tell when something was wrongwhy couldnt they see it in their own relationship.
The sun is beginning to set. I havent heard any movement inside. I better go check if Bettes car is hereshe should be home by now. Standing up, I walk back around to the front of the house. Noticing the empty driveway, I realize she isnt home yet. Ill just stay out here until she gets home.
After another hour of sitting on the front steps, contemplating how to ask Bette what happened I see her car. She pulls into the driveway and looks at me. She can see me, but I dont think she can tell who it is.
How could you to it Bette? I say in a loud whisper. I cant seem to speak any louder than that.
Look Shane, Im not in the mood right now she replies, walking up the stepsright past me. I just came from seeing Tinaand I dont have it in me to talk any more.
Then listen! I begin to regain my voice. She opens the door and walks into the dark house. As she walks into the kitchen and opens a cabinet, I turn on the lights. I close the door and walk into the kitchen. Shes drinking that water like she just ran a marathon.
Bette, you have to answer for what you did. I confront her.
Slamming the glass down, AND WHAT WOULD THAT BE? Huh, Shane? What did I do that is any of your business? She obviously not holding back any more.
Its my business because youre my friend, I cry out, Tinas my friend. I looked up to you guys. Whenever I look at you I know true love really does existbut nownow its all gone. Tears are now streaming down my face. How am I supposed to go on, knowing that things will never be the same?
She regains her composure and says, I dont know Shane. Im still trying to figure out how Ill go on. She then pulls me into a comforting embrace. Well get through thisthe two of ustogether. Well both have our families. With those words, she walks me over to the couch, where I sitcrying in her armsdrifting off to sleep.
