“30?” Alice asked. Bette shook her head and mumbled ‘amateur’ which aroused some amused laughs from the others.

“50?” Bette offered and Shane nodded, looking at Dana who agreed. Shane wrote a big 5 then 0 at the top of the napkin.

“You’ll make it 5 days,” Dana said and sat back. Shane gaped and shook her head, writing neatly, Dana=5days.

“A week and half. 11 days,” Alice said with certainty. Shane shook her head and wrote the numbers down. She looked at Bette Expectantly who was obviously still thinking.

“Hmm. A-”

“I want in on this action-” Drew said sitting down with a girl none of them noticed except Shane and Carmen. Carmen smiled, she knew Drew had been listening as she bought her coffee at the counter. Shane smiled also and nodded. “Oh, and this is Cherish.” Drew said motioning to her friend. Shane cocked her a lopsided grin knowingly. Drew avoided it and sat back in her seat, thinking.

“What day is it?” She asked thoughtfully.

“Wednesday,” Alice said matter-of-factly.

Drew thought some more. Then lifted up her right hand and counted. Then she sat back and thought some more.

“Today’s the first day of the bet? So this is day one?” She asked, just to make sure. Shane nodded quietly, observing her friend with a smile.

“You’ll do it three days from today. You’ll do it on the fourth official day of the bet,” Drew said with finality. When Shane looked appalled Drew shrugged and stated, “What can I say? There’s no way you’ll make it past the weekend.”

“Wait!” Tina said. Practically jumping out of her seat. Everyone turned to her questioningly.

“What?”

“One of the conditions of the bet obviously has to be that Carmen stays at Shane and Jenny and Moira and Drew’s place,” Tina laughed as did everyone else, “For the entirety of the bet. I mean not while she’s working, but she can’t stay at her moms, cause that’s not fair. When your away from each other, there’s a little less temptation, and you can always- um- satisfy yourself in- other- ways.”

Everyone realized this and nodded in agreement. Shane wrote the rule in small letters at the bottom of the napkin.

“So it’s my turn now?” Bette asked and the silent that met her agreed. She nodded slowly and thought a bit more, “Okay. I know now.” Her voice dropped and she added, “Sorry Shane,” knowing that her friend was hopping for her to bet that they’d make it. “9.”

“9 days! God you guys have no faith in us,” Carmen shrieked in a playful disbelief.

“That’s where your wrong Carmen. We have complete faith in you. Faith that you guys can’t keep your hands off of each other,” Drew said with a smile that the entire group shared- the entire group except for Carmen and Shane.

“But only because you love each other so much,” Alice added.

“Yeah. And I personally think it’s healthy, and that you guys are lucky. But you’ll come to realize that soon enough,” Tina said knowingly, shaking her head in amusement.
